JANESVILLE - The Rock County 4-H Fair kicked off Tuesday night with the crowning of the fair royalty, who will reign over the 79th annual fair for the remainder of the week.
Tom Schambow and Julia Van Veldhuisen were chosen as the 2008 Rock County 4-H Fair king and queen at Tuesday's coronation. The two will spend the week representing the 4-H Fair and participating in various fair events, including project judging and stage acts.
Van Veldhuisen,17, is a 2008 graduate of Janesville Craig High School and plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the fall to pursue a nursing degree. She is a 10-year member of the Badger 4-H club, and her projects include clothing, youth leadership, home environment, photography, foods, rabbits, visual arts and woodworking. She has held several offices for various 4-H clubs. While attending Craig High School, Van Veldhuisen was on the swim team and National Honor Society.
“I'm excited,” Van Veldhuisen said after winning the title. “I didn't expect it at all.”
As a city girl, Van Veldhuisen wasn't sure she would be able to win, but her dedication to the 4-H program paid off. In the program book, Van Veldhuisen wrote that her time in 4-H has shaped who she is and what she hopes to become. She also wrote that she wants a future helping people in need.
As the 2008 queen, Van Veldhuisen said she is excited to spend the week representing the fair.
“I'm in awe right now,” she said. “I'm honored.”
Van Veldhuisen also will represent Rock County when she competes for the title of the Wisconsin Association of Fairs Fairest of the Fair in January.
Schambow, 17, is a 2008 graduate of Milton High School and plans to attend the University of Wyoming-Laramie to pursue a business degree. He is a 11-year member of the Consolidated 4-H club, and his projects include sheep, foods, house plants, foods preservation, woodworking, youth leadership, visual arts, photography and crops. Schambow has been active in several clubs and community service activities. While attending Milton High School, Schambow participated in band, choir and cross country.
“I'm excited and surprised,” Schambow said. “There were a lot of good competitors.”
As king, Schambow said he will strive to represent the fair in a good, positive manner.
“It is really exciting for me,” he said.
Schambow praised the 4-H program for the opportunities it gives participants. In the program book, Schambow wrote that 4-H has given him the opportunities to succeed in life.
“It's such a good program,” he said Tuesday night.
For Schambow, watching himself grow throughout his 11 years in 4-H has been the most exciting part of his participation. He looks forward to helping younger kids grow in this program, much like adult mentors helped him.
Schambow and Van Veldhuisen were crowned by 2007 winners Adam George and Carly Andrew. The outgoing king and queen gave their farewell speeches moments before the new royalty were chosen.
Andrew had a few words of advice for the new queen, telling her to take advantage of every opportunity, even if some aren't directly given to her.
“The way to excel is to do more than what is expected,” Andrew said.
This year's court includes Katie Arnold, Lima 4-H; Jennifer Johnson, Janesville Parker FFA; Heather Bader, Magnolia 4-H; Kaitlyn Beaty, Milton 4-H; Robert O'Leary, Evansville 4-H; Tyler Franklin, Evansville FFA; Tim Krebs, Turtle 4-H; Tyler Shear, Beloit Bulldogs 4-H.
