Fourth of July celebrations listed

Stateline Area residents don't have to drive far to find something fun to do on the Fourth of July. A variety of activities will be held on the Friday holiday. Stateline Area celebrations include:

Beloit

At Pops on the Rock in Beloit, the whole family can enjoy a concert, fireworks and food near the riverfront.

“It's a wonderful way to spend the Fourth of July,” said Martha Mitchell, Visit Beloit executive director.

Families can even arrive early to the day's events and picnic in Riverside Park, Mitchell said.

Activities start at 7:30 p.m., with the presentation of colors. Sergeant Jenna Lake, who will be on leave from active service in Iraq and was recently awarded the Bronze Star, will accompany the color guard. Sgt. Lake is the daughter of symphony board member Barbara Lake.

The Beloit Janesville Symphony Orchestra will present a free concert at 7:45 p.m. in the Harry Moore Pavilion at Riverside Park.

The concert will include traditional favorites as well as the world premiere of “The Call,” a patriotic song written by Rob Tomaro, BJSO music director and conductor. Local musician Greg Gerard will sing during “The Call.”

The program will also feature special guest Stephanie Klett, who will be the trumpet soloist and narrator. Klett was Miss Wisconsin in 1994 and is host of “Discover Wisconsin.”

A fireworks celebration will immediately follow the concert, which is coordinated by Visit Beloit and funded from community donations.

The food vendors Otha's Ribs and Marine Corps League will start serving meals at 5 p.m. Friends of BJSO will sell popcorn and water as well, Mitchell said.

The Beloit Snappers are playing at 7 p.m. against the Clinton Lumberkings. There will be fireworks after the show, so Beloit residents will have two choices of where to watch fireworks in Beloit on Friday, Mitchell said.

Janesville

On Thursday, the Beloit Janesville Symphony Orchestra will play at 6:30 p.m. in the Lower Courthouse Park.

Shirland

The Shirland Fourth of July Celebration will begin with a parade at 10 a.m. Friday.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Shirland Fire Department, three of the four surviving first firefighters will be parade marshals: Charles Barker, Don Welch and Ray Preiss. The fourth surviving firefighter is Ernest Matthews, who will be absent from the parade because he lives in Florida.

After the parade, the Rockton Legion Rifle Squad will fire a 21-gun salute. Kary Krebs will sing the national anthem.

A day full of food, games and prizes from area merchants is planned, which will end with a drawing for a nine-piece patio set, an outdoor swing and $25 cash. Fireworks will go off at dusk.

The yearly event is sponsored by the Shirland Volunteer Fire Department Association and Auxiliary.

Rockford

Rockford's Fourth of July parade will start at 7 p.m. Friday at Seventh Street and Sixth Avenue. The parade will go north to State Street and west to Wyman, where it will turn south and disband at the railroad trestle.

A fireworks display will take place at 9:30 p.m. to the accompaniment of synchronized music on B103. The rain date for fireworks is July 5.

Admission to the preferred seating at Davis Park is $6 for adults and free for children under 4. Two live bands and concession stands will also be present at the park.

The entry fee for the 8K or two-mile run is $20 through today, and the entry fee for the walk is $10 up until the end of the day.

The 23rd annual Patriotic Prayer Breakfast will start at 8:30 a.m. at the Sinnissippi Music Shell in Rockford. The first 1,000 people will receive a free continental breakfast. At 9 a.m., patriotic music will be played. The Citizenship Award will be presented, and the newly crowned Little Miss and Mr. Fourth of July will be introduced as well.

The guest speaker of the morning is Lt. Col. Robert Maginnis, an expert on national security and foreign affairs. Maginnis is a senior strategist with the U.S. Army Analyst Group.

Discovery Center Museum will hold an event called “Family Fun Days: KABOOM!” on Friday. Children and parents can celebrate the Fourth of July with patriotic crafts and chemistry, including popping potato cannons, sparkling arts and fluttering flags.

The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the museum, with includes the “KABOOM!” activity, is $6 for adults and $5 for children ages 2-17. The museum is located at 711 N. Main St. in Rockford, and is only a short walk from downtown to view the parade and fireworks later in the evening.

" I was curious if evereyone who goes up to the mall to watch the fireworks show will still be allowed to park up there and hang out like we usually do. With all the construction going on up there, they might restrict access to areas where people park along the fence between the mall parking lot and wher they light the fireworks at fairbanks. "
