Baldwin, Ryan push BadgerCare
Nine members of Wisconsin's Congressional delegation, led by U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, and Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Janesville, appealed to Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt to grant Wisconsin a waiver to further expand its BadgerCare Plus program and give more residents access to affordable health care.

Under federal rules, states are limited in the ways they can use federal Medicaid funds.

Last year, Wisconsin received a waiver to institute BadgerCare Plus, a Medicaid-funded program that provides health insurance for all children under the age of 19. The state now seeks a waiver for a second phase of BadgerCare Plus that will provide affordable health care coverage to low income, uninsured, childless adults for implementation Jan. 1, 2009.

Comprehensive plan discussed
The Rock County Advisory Committee in conjunction with the Rock County Planning Department will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. July 1 on the second floor of the Rock County Courthouse, Jury Assembly Room, 51 S. Main St., Janesville.

The meeting will be to tentatively approve the land use element and the housing element of the comprehensive plan.

Rock County residents are encouraged to attend this meeting. The land use and housing element discussion will include goals and objectives, inventory and other essential information dealing with these elements.

It is possible that members of and possibly a quorum of other governmental bodies of the county may be in attendance at this meeting to gather information; no action will be taken by any governmental body at the meeting.

Smoke check site offers training
Wisconsin retailers have a new training tool as the Wisconsin Wins program launches www.smokecheck.org, a free Web site that offers instruction on how to avoid illegal tobacco sales to minors.

The site features study guides and an official test that provides retail employees with everything they need to know about Wisconsin tobacco sales law.

“We're proud that most of our retailers don't sell tobacco to minors,” said Debbie Fischer, Rock County Youth2Youth director. “But we want to help all retailers uphold that same standard by providing them with this free training.”

Wisconsin Wins provides retailer training, media and community outreach and education. The program is managed by the Wisconsin Tobacco Prevention and Control Program. For more information, visit www.smokecheck.org or contact Rock County Youth2Youth at (608)365-1244.
