Lawton impressed with Beloit

People are beginning to know the real Beloit.

That's at least what Greater Beloit Chamber President Nancy Forbeck took away from a speech by Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton at Vision Beloit Monday morning.

Lawton was in town Monday to further discuss Gov. Jim Doyle's State of the State Address.

“I have been at the Chamber for nearly a decade,” Forbeck said. “And what really struck me is that (Lawton) felt comfortable talking about us, Beloit. People are beginning to know the real Beloit. We've come a long way.”

In Lawton's discussion at Vision Beloit, she said Beloit has tremendous opportunity.

“It used to be thought that the only hope in this town lay in a casino, and that was so disheartening,” she said. “Beloit has such a rich history, and I'm delighted to be here and in this building.”

Her stop in Beloit was a chance for community leaders to see how Doyle's vision for the state fits in with Beloit's own vision, she said.

“We want to support your success here,” she said.

Lawton outlined Doyle's Grow Wisconsin plan, which he launched in 2003. The plan was launched to help create good-paying jobs for Wisconsin citizens. The plan was followed up with a second set of job creation initiatives in 2005.

Since 2003, tens of thousands of jobs have been created. Lawton said Doyle's committed to growing the state's economy and making Wisconsin the prime place for manufacturers, agricultural producers and innovative new businesses to expand their operations.

After paying respects to the late Ken Hendricks, who died last month, Lawton said she's become especially impressed with the progress ABC Supply Co. is making in the industry.

“ABC is exactly the kind of business Doyle has in mind,” Lawton said. “Especially with its decision to go green in 2001.”

Lawton also made reference to the strides Wisconsin has made in health care and education, including the BadgerCare Plus initiative, which is helping to provide health care for all children in the state, and the Wisconsin Covenant, which has been helping all students receive high education.

“The heart of the Governor's vision can start right here at the baseline of the state,” Lawton said. “With our absolute determination to do this, we will get it done.”

Martha Mitchell, executive director of Vision Beloit, expressed pride Monday in Lawton's visit to Beloit, and in her praise of the city.

“This very significantly shows that she's truly coming to Beloit because of the progress we've made,” Mitchell said.

Forbeck said it's taken a while, but Beloit's progress is finally making its mark.

“To me it means that we really are moving the needle ahead as far as people's understanding of Beloit,” she said.
