An empire with reach, far and near

Although Ken Hendricks' many initiatives and properties around Beloit are the stuff of local legend, the late entrepreneur's business reach stretched across America.
The Hendricks empire consists of a mix of businesses and properties located over the country and world. His businesses ranged from a wind turbine manufacturer in Iowa to an insurance company in Missouri.
Some of the following enterprises - not a complete list; rather, a sampling - represent the diverse businesses located outside of Beloit that belong to Ken and Diane Hendricks:
Garick Corporation
Hendricks Holding Company, Inc. acquired The Garick Corporation on Jan. 2, 2007. Based out of Cleveland, Ohio, The Garick Corporation is a nationwide processor and distributor of Waste to Market products and distributor of sustainable natural resource products. The company converts waste to serve the compost, landscape, recreation, lawn, garden and construction industries. The company has sites in Beloit and Freeport.
A $50 million company, Garick has a corporate office in Cleveland and production facilities in South Charleston, Ohio; Cumming, Ga.; and New Milford, Conn. The company also has a barge loading terminal in Perryville, Tenn.
Gateway Insurance Company
Hendricks Holding Company, Inc. purchased the stock of the holding company which owns Gateway Insurance Company in St. Louis, Mo., in 2005. Gateway Insurance Company, provides non-standard private passenger and commercial auto coverage.
American Patriot Insurance Company
Hendricks also launched American Patriot Insurance Agency Inc. 15 years ago. The company specializes in offering packages for professional residential and commercial roofing and construction industries. Its corporate offices are in Westchester, Ill., with more than 10 sites across the country.
Hendricks Industries
Hendricks Holding Company, Inc. purchased the assets of Roug A/S, a Denmark based wind power products manufacturer in February of 2007. Together the companies will form Hendricks Industries. Based in Herning, Denmark, Roug A/S is a manufacturing company of towers, cabins and foundations for the wind turbine industry.
Roug A/S delivers not only the towers, but also the cabins, foundations, frames and other internal components to the wind turbine industry. Roug has approximately 180 employees in Herning, Denmark.
Involved in wind turbine plant
In October of 2007, Hendricks unveiled plans to build a $25 million production facility that will construct towers weighing 80 tons and standing 260 feet tall in Keokuk, Iowa. Hendricks also invested in the Southeast Iowa Port Terminal. The new facility will be built adjacent to the Southeast Iowa Port Terminal, formerly the Iowa Gateway Terminal.
Humane Manufacturing
Hendricks Holding Company Inc., recently acquired a majority interest in Humane Manufacturing based in Baraboo, Wis.
Humane Manufacturing makes molded rubber mats which primarily have been used in the fitness market and in horse stalls and dairy barns for the comfort of animals. It has manufacturing facilities in Baraboo and Janesville. Humane Manufacturing sells its products nationally and internationally, with about 15 percent of its current output being exported.
Riverbend Development, LLC
The company started construction on the first phase of River Shores, a mixed-use development which will include condominiums, apartments, townhouses and commercial space in West Bend, Wis. in 2005.
Rock County properties
In 2002 HDG purchased Arrow Park, the former Parker Pen plant off North Parker Drive in Janesville. Hendricks converted the building into a home for growing businesses.
In May of 2007 Hendricks added a new startup company, American Industrial Steel and Supply (AISS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hendricks Holdings Corporation managed by Henry Technologies, Inc. of Beloit. AISS has a product line of welding and industrial supplies. The AISS showroom at 520 N. Parker Dr., Janesville, is the former CB&K showroom.
In July of 2007, Hendricks Holding Company acquired Janesville companies CRT Processing Corp. and Midwest Electronics Warehouse Inc. CRT Processing is a recycler of electronics such as computer monitors and televisions. Midwest Electronics is a refurbisher of electronic merchandise such as computer systems, printers and flat-screen televisions.
Winnebago County properties
In Rockton, Hendricks owns the Rockton Commons, a 20,500-square-foot facility on East Main Street.
In South Beloit, Hendricks purchased the former Besly Products Corporation plant, 100 Dearborn Ave., South Beloit. The 26-acre site includes a 110,000-square-foot manufacturing facility which will produce Henry Technologies' valves.
In Rockford, Hendricks purchased the Essex Wire Plant, 2816 N. Main St. The old Essex wire plant is 308,990 square feet, more than two-thirds the size of the old Machesney Park Mall, and is located on 15 acres. Hendricks was planning to rent space to fledgling businesses in the plant.
