Rock County Sheriff's Department reports show Ken Hendricks accidentally fell to his death while checking progress on a second floor construction project at his home Thursday night.
The report states that a deputy arrived at the Hendricks home at 4007 W. Eau Claire Road in rural Afton, shortly before 10:30 p.m. Thursday, and found Hendricks unconscious on the garage floor. His wife, Diane, who was performing CPR, told the deputy her husband had fallen.
It appeared Hendricks had fallen onto the garage floor from the second floor, which was undergoing construction, the report stated. Blue tarps covered the floor above the garage and two-by-fours were nailed down in various places to hold the tarp down.
Diane Hendricks told the deputy she and her husband had just returned from a bank-sponsored party, when he walked out of the house door and onto the new second floor construction area above the garage to see how much work had been completed.
When she returned to the house after retrieving items from her vehicle, she couldn't find her husband, so she began calling for him. When he did not respond to her calls, she went outside to look for him and found him unconscious on the concrete garage floor with a head injury.
That's when she called 911 and began CPR.
Beloit paramedics transported Hendricks to Beloit Memorial Hospital, where doctors were able to retrieve a pulse and raise his blood pressure, but he was to be transferred to Rockford Memorial Hospital to treat bleeding on the brain, the report stated.
Hendricks died Friday morning during surgery at Rockford Memorial, according to a statement from ABC Supply.
Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia said the cause of death was blunt trauma of the head, due to a fall.
“We did not find that he had any type of medical crisis that would cause him to fall,” she said.
Funeral arrangements for Hendricks are still pending.
