NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Two former Beloit high school standouts earned All-American honors Saturday at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships hosted by Saint Olaf College.
UW-Whitewater senior Brian Butzler, a former WIAA state champion from Beloit Turner, finished 20th in 25 minutes and six seconds. UW-Stevens Point junior Dominick Meyer, a Beloit Memorial graduate, was one second behind (25:07) and finished in 25th place.
The top 35 finishers in the race earned All-American status. Thirty-two teams and a total field of 280 runners participated in the meet.
Butzler's time was the fourth fastest time by a UW-W runner this season and all four times belong to Butzler. It was the 17th fastest time in UW-W cross country history.
His cross country All-American honors add to a long list of accomplishments for the Warhawks. He was named the Outstanding Track Performer at the 2007 WIAC Indoor Championships after winning the mile and 3,000 meters. He earned All-American honors by placing second in the mile in the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships last spring and added All-American honors with a third place in the 1,500 meters in the NCAA III Outdoor Championships in May.
NOTES: UW-Platteville's Tyler Sigl won the individual title Saturday by finishing in 24:24. The team title went to New York University with 128 points, followed by Haverford College (Pa.) at 150, New York-Cortland (158), Calvin College (214), UW-La Crosse (221) and UW-Stevens Point (326).
