Recycling drive set for Saturday

In an effort to commemorate America Recycles Day, two area schools are holding a metal recycling drive this weekend.

On Saturday, the Parent-Teacher Organization of Powers and Townview elementary schools will hold the drive 8 a.m. - noon at Powers Elementary School, 620 Hillside Drive, Beloit.

PTO Vice President and Treasurer Darcy Boatman said Behr Recycling is donating the use of large trash bins and a forklift. The service is free to participants and all the proceeds collected from the drive will go back to the schools.

“(People) should clean out their garages and get rid of stuff you have to pay for to get rid of,” she said.

Behr will pay 5 cents a pound for metal and 60 cents per pound of aluminum cans.

This is not the first event the schools had to remind students to recycle. Bea Lengjak, recycling coordinator for the Town of Beloit, went to Powers on Monday and spoke to the students about recycling. She gave each one of them a coloring book and some received T-shirts made from recycled materials.

Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful, located in Loves Park, wants to remind the Stateline Area America Recycles Day is today.

ARD was established 10 years ago as an awareness campaign. On this day, Americans are encouraged to recycle and buy recycled products. The hope is through this awareness program, Americans will continue to be sensitive toward recycled material.

KNIB's recycling center in Roscoe collects more than 10 tons of recyclable materials every month. The agency also holds three clothing drives a year, which bring in more than 100,000 pounds of clothing and soft goods. A drive collecting metals and electronics is held twice a year. In 2007, the drive brought in over 134 tons of metal.

“The significance of recycle day is not only to bring awareness of recycling, but to encourage people to recycle,” said Lori Gummow, executive director of Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful.

America Recycles Day began in Texas. In years past, KNIB tried to hold some events on this day, but because of the unpredictability of the weather, no more events were planned, Gummow said.

Recycling is important because it protects the environment and saves landfill space, she said. It also helps the economy, from the collection of recyclable goods to the creation of materials from recycled products, she said.

“Recycling is a simple way in which people can protect the environment, preserve our resources and contribute to the economic well-being of the country,” Gummow said.

“We are making sure we are preserving our environment for the future. It's all about the kids,” she said. “So they can breathe clean air and drink clean water and live in a safe and healthy community.”

Gummow said she does see an increase in recycling around ARD. The center hosts a recycling center in Roscoe every Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon. She said the center is staffed completely by volunteers.

“We do it as a community service project,” Gummow added.

The center is located in the parking lot of the Waste Management Corporation, off of Highway 251.
