Scary things are happening as the Stateline Area creeps closer to Halloween.

The South Beloit Haunted Barn will kick off it's 10th annual season on Friday and continue every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until Halloween.

Owner of the barn, Rich Barclay, said things have changed just a bit this year. In the past, the South Beloit Lions Club was a big part in the haunted barn, but this year the club decided not to continue. Barclay said even though the Lions are no longer a part of the haunting, he is still hoping to raise enough admission funds to donate to charity.

Barclay decided to keep the haunted barn going because it usually brings in around 2,500 patrons each year. He has also come up with a new way to help raise funds for charity.

Each year 10 to 20 high school and college students would volunteer their time in the scare. This year, the participants will get a choice of getting paid $20 a night for their work or donating their pay to charity, in which the amount would rise to $25. Barclay said the workers can choose by night whether they want the cash or want to donate it.

“We're trying to get the kids broke in on charity work,” he said.

Last year, some of the new features of the century-old barn included a vibrating floor, holographic images and motion sensitive lighting. Scenes of Frankenstein getting his head examined and bodies being stretched and tortured abound. This year, Barclay talked about a wall-size mirror that may not always reflect what the visitor thinks he or she will see.

Barclay said setting up the barn isn't too much trouble because the structure remains up all year long.

“All the walls and major structures are there,” he said. “It's just a matter of redecorating. It's a blast working out there.”

The grounds also feature a hayride put on by the Harlem/Roscoe Fire Department. Barclay hinted at a possible deal next year that could bring another haunted house to the location, but he said it was too early to announce anything indefinitely.

The haunted barn and hayrides will be open every 7 - 11 p.m. each Friday, Saturday and Sunday before Halloween. Admission is $8 and the grounds are located at 6512 Manchester Road.
