(Wednesday) - The Beloit school board has voted to borrow $130,000 to finance a new high school, and has awarded the contract for general construction to J.P. Cullen Co. of Janesville for $92,525; the only Beloit firm bidding for the work was Schneiberg & Cliff, whose bid was $108,082; only 65 citizens attended the meeting to vote on the borrowing plan and the outcome was 47-16 in favor. Miss Sally Ervine and Eugene J. Reitler, both well known young Beloit people, have been married at the “Old Mission” on Madeline Island.

(Wednesday) - Ground has been broken for the new Klenzade Products Co. plant at Union Street and the Northwestern tracks on Highway 51 in South Beloit; C.B. Shogren, president of the company, says there's to be a 100 by 260 foot building erected on the 45 acre tract, with more buildings to be added later; Klenzade makes detergent powders mainly used commercially. The second member of the Keron Walsh family of Durand, 19-year-old David, has died of polio; he was one of 10 Walsh children attacked by infantile paralysis in September 1955. South Beloit city council members say they'll meet with state highway officials to try to persuade the state not to create a 40-foot-wide median between north and south traffic lanes on Illinois Highway 2, Blackhawk Boulevard; the commissioners say the wide strip would prevent parking along the roadway. Orfordville's new post office has been opened for business, says Postmaster Harry Holden.

(Saturday) - South Beloit's new community-senior center, the Sand Castle, has officially opened at 201 S. Eighth St. Keith Keller, 31, of Beloit, died early today when his motorcycle collided with a car on Highway 51 south of Cranston Road. Buffa's in South Beloit has a shrimp basket dinner for $3.95 and Benedetti's on Highway 51 has an all-you-can-eat Sunday buffet for $5.50. The Skavlem-Williams log cabin and new ball park facilities in the Town of Clinton are to be dedicated Sunday. Turner's Trojans blanked Elkhorn, 14-0 with Jim Stiener scoring both touchdowns. Beloit Memorial's girls tennis team downed Monroe, 6-3, with Mary Baller, Sharon Woelfel and Lisa Andreoni posting singles wins.

(Thursday) - The Beloit school board will be choosing the next principal of Beloit Memorial High School without the help of outgoing Superintendent Dr. Rosa Smith; the board decided to re-advertise the principalship due to lack of qualified candidates and by the time the choice is made, Smith will have left. South Beloiters Richard Lounsbury has won a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire in the Beloit Catholic High School's Saderfest raffle; the car was provided by Gene Dencker Buick-Pontiac. Beloit Memorial's girls' volleyball team downed Madison Lafollette behind the sharp play of Briana Johnson and Katie Bussan.
