Soldiers return from Iraq mission
Members of the Wisconsin Army National Guard's 1157th Transportation are scheduled to arrive in Oshkosh today after a one-year mission in Iraq.

The company of 165 soldiers included nine soldiers from the 1158th Transportation Company in Beloit and seven soldiers from the 132nd Support Battalion in Janesville.

The soldiers left Wisconsin June 17, 2006 for about two months of training at Camp Atterbury, Ind., and were deployed to Iraq in September of last year. During their duty in Iraq, soldiers performed 325 fuel hauling missions and delivered more than 16 million gallons of fuel. Soldiers also performed security missions, hauled other types of cargo and drove more than 300,000 miles while in Iraq.

Sex offender


to be released

A sex offender has been released from prison and will be residing at Rock Valley Community Corrections on Prairie Road in rural Janesville.

Jonathon J. Burhans, 31, also known as John Ellison, was convicted of second degree sexual assault of a child on April 18, 2006. He also was convicted of third degree sexual assault. He was convicted of sexual assault to a 14-year-old girl. His targeted victims have been minors and adult females, according to his criminal history.

He is a black man, 5 foot, 10 inches tall with a shaved head and brown eyes. He has a six-point star tattoo on his right hand and the words “Mad G” on his right biceps. He is to have no contact with minors and cannot enter taverns or liquor stores.

Ramada Inn reopens today
One wing of the Ramada Inn with 54 rooms will reopen today, after being inspected by South Beloit Fire Chief Ken Morse, South Beloit Mayor Randy Kirichkow said.

The hotel was closed last week because flooding in the basement caused damage and health concerns.

The hotel is working with its insurance company before reopening other areas, Kirichkow said.

Kirichkow said they hope the banquet facility and Cattails Restaurant will reopen in the next few weeks.

Ballroom dance set at college
The Ballroom Dance Club at Beloit College will host a dance at 9 p.m. Saturday on Campbell Plaza in front of Middle College on the Beloit College campus.

The Jack Farina Big Band will provide music, which will lead dancers through styles such as swing, tango, waltz, cha-cha and more. Beginners swing dance lessons will be offered at 8 p.m.

In the event of rain, the dance will be held in the main dining room of Pearsons Hall.

Carver-Roehl friends to meet
CLINTON - The Friends of Carver Roehl Park will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at the new pavilion in the park.

The 24-by-52-foot pavilion recently was completed thanks to the efforts of volunteers and funds donated.

The group will talk about plans for the Fall Fest at the park, set for Oct. 7.

Race relations to be discussed

JANESVILLE - Adults can join a study circle on race and race relations that will be held on Mondays Sept. 10 through Oct. 15. The group will meet 6 - 8:30 p.m. in Room 134 of Andrews Hall on the campus at 2909 Kellogg Ave.

The goal of the group is to work together to make strides in such issues as bias, crime, community relations, race relations among young people, diversity issues, connecting citizens to governance and more, according to study circle facilitator Kristin Fillhouer.

Fillhouer, who has a master's degree in curriculum development from UW-Whitewater, is a member of Janesville's Diversity Action Team and has lead similar study circles for the last two years.

The cost for the six-session course is $15. To register or for more information, call the Office of Continuing Education at (608)758-6541.
