The television show is celebrating 20 years of broadcast history with a special commercial-free episode featuring the state's best vacation spots. The show will air throughout the Midwest on June 16 and 17 in select markets.
“It's a show 20 years in the making,” said Stephanie Klett, public relations manager of Discover Mediaworks Inc. and host of Discover Wisconsin Television and Radio. “The show will feature 10 of our favorite places, and Beloit is one of them.”
The segment on Beloit will highlight entertainment attractions such as the annual Beloit International Film Festival, Angel Museum, riverfront, Beckman Mill and more.
Klett wanted to include her hometown in the show and said her personal favorite activities in Beloit include walking by Beloit College, the riverfront and the Angel Museum. She likes to top off her stroll with a glass of wine at Cafe Belwah.
The anniversary show will also include three-minute segments on Eagle River, Superior, Marquette County, New Lisbon, Wausau and Central Wisconsin and Madison. After highlighting her favorite destinations, Klett will discuss Wisconsin as a dairyland and the state's rich Native American culture and heritage.
The program will end with a salute to Wisconsin and clips of the past 20 years filming the show. Highlights will include the state's unusual attractions such as the Rock in the House in Fountain City, the world's largest Loon in Mercer, Hayward's fiberglass musky and the world's largest letter M in Platteville.
Since 1993 Stephanie Klett, a former Miss Wisconsin, has been host of the Discover Wisconsin Television Series. In 1994 she took over writing, researching and hosting duties of the Discover Wisconsin Radio Series.
During her many travels, Klett said she has learned that Wisconsinites are sincere, devoted, friendly, fun, spirited, creative as well as being beer-lovers, brat-lovers and Packer lovers.
Klett said the show has a staff of 28 full-time employees. Because shows feature locations in all four seasons, Klett does a lot of traveling. Klett works about 80 hours a week. It takes about 100 hours to produce just one Discover Wisconsin show.
“We go to each community at least six times,” Klett said.
Klett's favorite community outside Beloit is Bayfield and the Apostle Islands, a cluster of 22 islands at the northern tip of the state. The 616-person village includes some of the state's best restaurants as well as places for ATVs, kayaks and dog sleds to speed through.
“It feels like a small New England fishing village,” Klett said.
Klett said two of the most interesting people she's met in Wisconsin include two women, Sister Mary Edmund and Sister Mary Irmina from Two Rivers. She nicknamed them the Two Sisters from Two Rivers.
“These nuns are amazing. They operate a home for children who have no use of their arms or legs, and no ability to speak. Can you imagine? When I first met them they were 80 years old and had more energy and zest for life than people half their age,” Klett said.
Klett said the two women created an environment of love, joy and laughter. What's more is that they hadn't been on a vacation or had a day off in 25 years.
“They firmly believe their vocation is their vacation. They were put on earth to do God's work, and to do that work is a blessing. I left Two Rivers and made the drive back home to Beloit. I couldn't speak; I didn't turn on the radio. All I could do was marvel at their amazing grace,” Klett said.
Klett has experienced plenty of adventures during her two decades of work. During a segment in Wisconsin Dells at a place called Extreme World, Klett was put in a harness and pulled up to the top of a crane. She was then dropped at a very high speed to free-fall and swing back and forth. Klett said she screamed so loud she literally blew out the audio system.
During her many experiences Klett has experienced the state's growth firsthand. In addition to positive changes taking place in Beloit, Klett said that communities are improving all over the state, creating attractions and events to compete in the tourism industry.
Klett said tourism generates over $12 billion a year for Wisconsin. New trends such as spiritual attractions and eco-tourism are designed to keep people connected to the state and re-visiting it. Although Wisconsin has more than 15,000 lakes, rivers and streams, Klett said the state will have to deal with the challenge of invasive species in the future.
Klett isn't sure if she will continue the show for 20 more years or not.
“Who knows? I love what I do and have always felt challenged, but half the fun of living is exploring new possibilities. I've always wanted to be a minister,” Klett said.
