Best Western to open in a few weeks

A hotel hasn't been built in South Beloit in 40 years, but that changed with the construction of a Best Western that plans to open in a few weeks.
The exact date the hotel will open is still uncertain, but it will probably be June 22 or 29, said Brian Brandstetter, president of Cornerstone Hotel Management Inc., the company that will manage the hotel. An open house will be held in August or September.
The three-story hotel will have 67 “really pretty” rooms and one meeting room, Brandstetter said.
The amenities include an indoor swimming pool and a whirlpool, a fitness center, free breakfast daily, six whirlpool suites, wired and wireless Internet, a guest laundry facility, iron and ironing boards, hair dryers, coffee makers, in-room guest safes and more.
One feature of Best Western that makes it stand out from other hotels includes having a microwave and a refrigerator in each room, Brandstetter said. The Best Western in South Beloit will also allow guests to control the room temperature by having thermostats in each room, Brandstetter said.
When Best Western first opens, the hotel will probably offer a special rate to attract customers, Brandstetter said.
However, some visitors might notice the hotel without even knowing about the special rate because a three-sided Best Western sign on top of the building will be visible from Interstate 90, he said.
“We welcome them with open arms,” Mayor Randy Kirichkow said. “We're looking forward to having their name near the interstate.”
Best Western is located on 2 acres at 5910 Technology Drive in South Beloit, south of the intersection of Gardner Street and Willowbrook Road.
The hotel will hire 20 full- and part-time employees. Those interested in a job at Best Western can apply at the site of the hotel in the front vestibule. On average, the wages will be $7 to $9 an hour, Brandstetter said.
Besides just running a business, Best Western will sponsor and kickboxing tournament in July and will help support local baseball teams as well, Brandstetter said.
“We're eager to contribute to the community in civic-minded and other ways,” Brandstetter said.
Cornerstone Hotel Management Inc. owns seven hotels. The company is based out of the Madison area, in DeForest, Wis.
Impact on South Beloit
South Beloit has a 4 percent hotel room tax, which means Best Western will bring in about $50,000 to $60,000 each year for the city, Kirichkow said. The 1 cent sales tax will generate an estimated $10,000 to $20,000 a year from the hotel, Kirichkow said.
The City of South Beloit offered Best Western a property tax abatement that will last two to three years, depending on the assessed value of the property, Kirichkow said. The hotel was also constructed in South Beloit's Enterprise Zone, which means that there was no sales tax on the building materials for the new structure, Kirichkow said. The city also reduced the sewer connection fee from $85,000 to $20,000 for Best Western and allowed for a variance in the height of the hotel and its sign, he said.
“Personally, I'd like to thank the city council for creating a positive incentive package,” Kirichkow said.
Best Western is located on an 8-acre site zoned as a commercial area with four to five parcels, Kirichkow said. Plans are still being talked about for other businesses that could possibly open near the hotel.
