Pitchers shine in winning nightcap
APPLETON, Wis. - Beloit College's baseball team was hoping for a sweep, but finally needed a strong pitching performance from starter Ryan Schmitz and reliever Sean Stubbendick to fashion a split at Lawrence Monday.
The Bucs won 4-3 after the Vikings had taken the opener, also 4-3, in 12 innings.
The first game was the completion of a game suspended by a snowstorm April 9 in the top of the 11th tied 3-3. Ben Webster's one-out single off Bryan Rizzo (1-1) in the bottom of the 12th drove in Evan Neuens with the game-winning run.
The Bucs, coming off a sweep on Sunday of Carroll, threatened in both the 11th and 12th. Eric Stall led off the 11th with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice. Ryan Whitcomb reached on an error and he and Stall both moved up a base on a two-out wild pitch. Luke Kostreva came on to face Phillip Roscoe and struck him out swinging.
Lawrence also left two runners on in the 11th. In the 12th, Beloit's Scott Slubowski walked with one out and stole second with two outs. Kostreva retired Hunter Nelson on a fly to center to end the inning.
That set the stage for the Vikings in the 12th. Neuns singled leading and after a sacrifice, Sam Laes was hit by a pitch and Tommy Schmidt walked to load the bases. Webster then singled up the middle off Rizzo to drive in Neuens.

The Bucs scored twice in the first inning. Jon Moran had an RBI single and Mike Bartz picked up an RBI with a groundout. Beloit made it 3-0 in the sixth. Slubowski led off with a double and scored on a single by Bartz.
Lawrence cut it to 3-2 with two in the bottom of the sixth.
Beloit answered in the seventh. Ryan Schmitz singled, took third on Nick Severson's base hit and scored on a fielder's choice by Whitcomb.
Lawrence tacked on a run in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run at third with one out. Stubbendick got out of it with a flyout to short center and a comebacker to the mound.
