SHARON - A Roscoe man with Beloit ties will be taking the helm at Sharon's new ethanol plant.
Sharon Ethanol LLC, a subsidiary of Global Renewable LLC, has appointed Les Ciciora as the company's director of operations.
Global Renewable LLC unveiled plans in November to construct and operate a 200-acre ethanol plant in Sharon. The plant is expected to produce up to 120 million gallons of ethanol a year and should be operational by late 2008. It will create approximately 55 new full-time jobs and more than 200 temporary construction jobs.
Ciciora brings more than 30 years of plant construction, management and expansion expertise to his new role, including extensive experience in enzyme, ethanol and other biotechnology-related manufacturing. Ciciora will have day-to-day responsibility for the construction, engineering and operation of the $195 million plant.
Originally from Chicago, Ciciora has lived in Roscoe since 1985. He moved to the area when he worked as a plant manager and later operations manager at Enzyme Biosystems in Beloit. When Genencor purchased Enzyme Biosystems in 2002, Ciciora took a job at Martek Biosciences Corp.
Located in Winchester, Ky., Martek has been a world leader in fermentation-based manufacturing. While at Martek, Ciciora served as the director of project engineering and facilities maintenance.
Prior to joining Martek, he was successively production and plant manager for Enzyme Bio Systems Ltd., a division of CPC International located in Beloit. Ciciora worked as a a research engineer, plant engineer and project manager for CPC before managing its enzyme production facility in Beloit.
Ciciora was thrilled with the opportunity to come back to the area. After all, he has a three-level house in a heavily wooded area of Roscoe.
Ciciora is also pleased with the Village of Sharon's efforts to work with the company.
“The village is cooperating and bending over backwards. They are very bullish on it,” Ciciora said.
The Village of Sharon has approved the land annexation. Ciciora said the next step is having the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources approve the plant's air permit.
“It will probably take a couple months to get the permit,” Ciciora said. “Right now we are interviewing contractors and subcontractors for the project and looking at raising equity.”
Ciciora said he is second in command. Jeffery Knight is the director of Global Renewable LLC. Knight lives in Whitewater and used to work under Tommy Thompson, former Wisconsin governor. Thompson is now a partner at Global Renewable LLC.
“Sharon Ethanol is pleased to have a professional with Les' credentials on the team,” Knight said. “Les is a seasoned operations professional who will ensure that the Sharon Ethanol plant is constructed and run with the utmost attention to efficiency and quality. His expertise and experience are an important addition to the highly skilled leadership already in place. With Les' help, we will move this important project forward to take advantage of the growing demand for ethanol.”
Ciciora earned a bachelor's of science degree from Purdue University and a master's of science degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology, both in chemical engineering.
