The newest fitness center to take the country by storm has opened a branch in Beloit.

Anytime Fitness, 2240 Prairie Ave., opened Jan. 4 and already has attracted 150 new members, according to manager Meghan Delaney.

Part of the gym's allure is it allows members to work out at any time during the day or night. That was what helped customer Mara Simpson decide to join.

Simpson recently was working out with the help of a personal trainer. Because Simpson didn't get out of work at Ace Hardware until 8 p.m., she was looking for a gym with extended hours. She found that and more at Anytime Fitness.

“It's nice, it's new and it's got a lot of different equipment,” Simpson said. “And it's got tanning.”

Simpson also appreciates the freedom to tan or try out pilates in an open area. With the extended hours, Simpson never runs into crowds.

That flexibility is what is making Anytime Fitness one of the fastest growing gyms in the country. Anytime Fitness was named the “Fastest Growing Co-Ed Fitness Franchise” by Franchise Times in 2005 and 2006.

Anytime Fitness began franchising in 2002 and now has sold more than 640 franchise locations, with a forecast of 800 sites by the end of 2006.

“Everybody's biggest excuse for not exercising is not having time,” Delaney said. “We take that excuse away and make it safe and convenient.”

Because Anytime Fitness has so many locations in the United States, including in Rockford, Madison and Sun Prairie, Wis., people can travel and take their membership cards with them.

Most of those customers are 18 to 50 years old. The gym prides itself on being modern and upbeat and has the machines to prove it. More than 40 of the latest Life Fitness and Hammer Strength cardio, free weight and circuit machines line the new 5,800-square-foot building.

Delaney said a variety of packages are available to accommodate gym-goers. Upon signing up, every new member will receive a session from a personal trainer instructing them on how to use the machines.

To make members feel more secure, they can wear a panic button. If it's pressed 911 emergency will be contacted. Delaney stressed that the building is secure and has motion detectors to ensure non-members do not follow members in the store. Anytime Fitness also provides individual bathrooms and showers with locks so members can enjoy their privacy.

Delaney co-manages the store with Jesse DeWayne Collins. The store also has four additional part-time employees.

Originally from St. Paul, Minn., Delaney has always enjoyed exercising and hopes to promote it more in Beloit.

“I really and truly believe it's not just a matter of vanity. Every person has to be part of an exercise program,” Delaney said.
