‘Equal rights for all citizens'
The Beloit League of Women Voters warns citizens that the proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay and lesbian marriage would take away rights currently enjoyed by all unmarried couples. The amendment's first sentence would prohibit gay or lesbian marriage in Wisconsin. Gay marriage is already illegal in Wisconsin and will still be, with or without the amendment.
The amendment's second sentence would abolish rights guaranteed to Wisconsin residents and write discrimination into Wisconsin's Constitution. Currently, both married and unmarried individuals have access to protections in hospital visit access, domestic violence response and child custody claims. This amendment would deny these rights to selected citizens.
The LWV supports equal rights for all, regardless of race or sex, and believes that individual rights protected by the Constitution should not be weakened or abridged.
Voters should take heed that this is not an advisory referendum. The proposal would amend our Wisconsin State Constitution without further action from the legislature or approval by the governor. Your vote cannot be taken lightly. Stand up for the ideals of equality and social justice. Reject this prejudicial amendment that takes rights away from our citizens. Vote ‘NO' on Nov. 7!
