EDITORIAL: The real Rosie is on display
Talk about extreme ... Rosie O'Donnell takes a back seat to no one.
PREFERABLY, ONE COULD just shrug off silly television shows like ABC's “The View.” After all, as ABC would argue, it's just entertainment.
But lots of people watch these programs. And some actually believe what they hear, take it as the final word, and form their own views accordingly.
So when ABC decides to provide a platform for outrageous and radical politics, reasonable people should not just look the other way.
Let's talk about Rosie O'Donnell.
THERE WAS A TIME when O'Donnell was promoted as the “Queen of Nice.” Wow. That could not be more wrong.
When the real Rosie showed up a few years ago, throwing haymakers from the Far Left in her talk show, her public appearances and her magazine, the public backlash was severe. So she took a sabbatical, to get “married,” adopt kids and set up a family home.
Now she's back, lured on the airwaves for “The View,” a talk show which claims to represent the opinions of women. That's presumptuous in the first place; no show really reflects the infinite variety of female thought. It's also sexist. Imagine a program which claimed to be the last word in men's opinions. The gender warriors would be out in force. But, never mind.
O'Donnell vowed to play nice and keep her demons leashed. But within a week of her first appearance she went over the cliff.
CO-HOST ELISABETH HASSELBECK, the token (mild, very mild) conservative on the show, commented on Sept. 12 about the threat posed to America and the world by Islamic extremists.
O'Donnell: “Radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam in a country like America.”
Say what?
We have not seen Christians flying planes into buildings. Or strapping on an explosive vest to blow up pizza parlors. Or driving explosive-laden cars into police stations. Or beheading bound prisoners. Or denying education to women.
SO WHY IS O'DONNELL this enraged by Christians? Just a guess: The Christian right has led the fight to prohibit gay marriage. O'Donnell, who is “married” to her lesbian partner, considers that Christian viewpoint to be a radical extremist stand. And, apparently, she thinks it is her right to use “The View” for a personal platform to attack religion.
Is that what ABC had in mind? The ratings, we hope, will reflect the true views of America's women. While we would never advocate censorship, we do recommend discretion with the remote control.
