MDA raises $22K in fund-raiser
More than $22,000 was raised Tuesday in the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Lockup in Beloit.
Vickie Hanson of Prairie Avenue Concrete and Sharon Carr of Elder-Beerman, were the top bail raisers, raising $1,2300 and $1,200 respectively. Five other jailbirds raised at least $600.
Funds raised in the Lockup go to the MDA of Southwestern Wisconsin, which serves more than 400 families.
Fall recycling drive planned
LOVES PARK - Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful will hold its annual Fall Metals Recycling Drive on 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Machesney Park Mall parking lot south of the J.C. Penney outlet store.
Last year, 120 tons of scrap metal was collected for recycling in the spring and fall metals drives, saving them from area landfills. An additional 70 tons was collected in the Spring 2006 Metals Drive.
New this fall, area residents can drop off their unwanted or used fire extinguishers for proper disposal.
Items commonly seen at the metals drive include microwaves, dishwashers, water heaters, fence posts, car batteries, stainless steel sinks, gas grills, ducting, siding, ladders, lawn mowers, bicycles, shelving, horse troughs, patio furniture, trailers and satellite dishes. There is a fee for disposal of some items.

White Avenue open to public
White Avenue, which has been closed for a major reconstruction project, has been opened for public traffic.
White Avenue, between Central Avenue and the Turtle Creek Bridge on Milwaukee Road has been closed to allow the installation of new payment, storm sewer, gutters, curbs and streetlights.
The $962,000 reconstruction project began in June.
Workshop to focus on youth
The Beloit Out of School Time Network, a project of Partners in Prevention - Rock County, is presenting a workshop titled “More Than a Place to Go,” 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday at the Rotary River Center, 1220 Riverside Drive, Beloit.
The workshop is open to all youth-serving organizations in Rock County and will focus on using developmental assets to strengthen their youth program while accomplishing their program goals.
The cost for the workshop is $20 per person, which includes lunch and materials. Registration deadline is Thursday.

Camacho makes police sergeant
ROCKTON - Dean Camacho was promoted to sergeant in the Rockton Police Department recently.
He has been with the Rockton Police Department since 1994, first as the D.A.R.E officer and then as the school district liaison officer.
Camacho has been an officer for 14 years.
He is one of four sergeants at the Rockton Police Department. Camacho is responsible for community policing and he is also the training manager.
