The Neese Family Foundation has pledged $100,000 toward the engineering program at the University of Wisconsin - Rock County.
“It was a huge boost,” said Nancy Forbeck, executive director of the Greater Beloit Chamber of Commerce.
The Greater Beloit Chamber of Commerce, Forward Janesville and the University of Wisconsin - Rock County Foundation, have been partnering to raise approximately $600,000 for a four-year engineering degree program at UW - Rock County, which will be offered in conjunction with UW - Platteville.
Forbeck also noted Blackhawk Bank in Beloit has contributed $5,000 to the project.
The Chamber and Forward Janesville have worked together for two years to bring an electrical and mechanical engineering program to Rock County. Businesses had reported a shortage of engineers. In the past, the nearest engineering programs were only available in Madison or Milwaukee.
A 4,300-square-foot engineering building and 2,200-square-foot engineering lab are to be built at the UW - Rock County Campus at 2909 Kellogg Ave., Janesville. The plan is to complete the building in the fall of 2007. The electrical engineering program is to start this fall and the mechanical engineering program is slated to start in 2010.
The Neese Family Foundation, named after Elbert (Ebby) and Margaret (Peggy) Neese, has provided funds to quality of life projects in the Stateline Area. Forbeck said the gift to the engineering program seems to fit well with the history and tradition of the Neese family. Elbert Neese was president of Beloit Corporation, which was Beloit's largest employer and he was well aware of the need for top-notch engineers at the company.
Forbeck also noted the cooperation between the chamber and Forward Janesville in this campaign.
“We worked with Forward Janesville as partners, knowing this is going to be a help to all of us,” Forbeck said.
She noted many businesses in the Stateline Area have contributed to this campaign, including Regal-Beloit, Mid-States Concrete, Paperchine, Greater Beloit Economic Corporation, First American Credit Union, Fairbanks Morse Engine Division and Taylor Freezer. Another 21 businesses and foundations in Rock County have contributed as well.
