‘Baldwin bill deserves support'
The commentary by Judy Robson in the Sept. 1 Beloit Daily News is an excellent recognition of the development of labor in Beloit. It is wonderful that we are finally seeing a return to better levels of employment.
However, we cannot rely on employment for health care protection as we did in the past, and this is becoming a major issue for our future. For many, health care is this election's most important issue. According to the 2003 census, more than 45 million Americans live without health coverage and 538,000 of them live in the State of Wisconsin.
Rep. Tammy Baldwin has introduced the Health Partnership through Creative Federalism Act (H.R. 5864), which allows states to develop innovative health care plans with federal funds. This cuts through red tape at the federal level and allows states to develop their own solutions for health care. After all, what is best for Wisconsin might not be the best option for other states. Our Senator Judy Robson and our Assembly Representative Chuck Benedict have been working on bills to implement this and have coordinated fully with Rep. Baldwin so that the federal legislation will support what we need to do here.
Rep. Baldwin's bill has strong bipartisan support, including the very conservative Heritage Foundation. We need to support Rep. Baldwin to get this bill passed so that we can all be free of the threat of bankruptcy by health care, and we can all be freed from the excessive costs that we incur when uncovered people let their health needs go unmet and end up going to the Emergency Room.
