(Tuesday) - The Beavers and the Beaver Queens have their most successful picnic ever Saturday at Yost Park; Attorney H.W. Adams delivered the principal speech, saying that he feels the assessment company chose well in naming the Beavers inasmuch as beavers are a most industrious animal. An annex containing rooms for female employees has been completed at the Hotel Hilton, and the refurbishing of the man structure is in progress. Mayor L.E. Cunningham has warned that anyone attempting to operate any sort of gambling device on Beloit streets will be arrested and prosecuted.

(Tuesday) - Arthur Frank Furman, longtime South Beloit businessman and civic leader, has died at age 79; he operated a sheet metal shop. George Moran, retired Beloit businessman and former chairman of the Beloit parks board, has observed his 93rd birthday. Spraying of some 1,250 elm trees in Beloit has begun as part of an effort to stem the spread of the Dutch elm disease, which kills the elms. Karen Nelson, Beloit's Aqua Days and centennial queen, will reign as queen of the seventh annual Central International Gladiolus show in Madison.

(Friday) - Air traffic controllers at the Rock County airport are on strike and are being joined by other unions in the area; the controllers say they won't go back to work even if their union is decertified by the federal government. The Beloit school board has approved a new code of conduct for students; among other things, it rules out fighting, smoking, gambling and unexcused absences. Daryl Lee Preston of Brodhead has been charged with attempted first degree murder and first degree sexual assault in the death of a Shorewood Hills nursery school teacher. Scott Panteleo is leading the pack in the Beloit Men's City Gold tournament; he shot a 70 to lead John Geise and John Thomas by one stroke; Gary Polglaze leads A Flight, Jim Haase is atop B Flight, and Mike Sennett is ahead in C Flight as play resumes tomorrow.

(Wednesday) - Beloit Catholic High Principal, Tim McKearn, says he'd like to see the school choice program, used in Milwaukee, adopted in Beloit so that the city could experience some of the successes enjoyed in Milwaukee; McKearn says a lot of families would like to have their children transfer to Beloit Catholic from Beloit Memorial, but can't afford the tuition; City Superintendent, Rosa Smith, says there are too many questions as to the effectiveness of the choice program to warrant considering it now. A group of Beloit parents led by Diane Gemignani is asking the school board to add a teacher at Todd school, where third grade classes are crowded; the board plans to wait and see how serious the overcrowding gets. The William Loremzes are noting their 50th anniversary.
