‘Misrepresenting Senator Feingold'
Regarding the recent editorial “Heir apparent to the Dean wing,” I was surprised to see hometown folks so badly misrepresent the character and positions of Senator Feingold. As a current neighbor, I have followed his positions since returning to Wisconsin in 1997.
Russ is by no means an extremist. His positions are much more akin to those of former Senator Bill Proxmire than Howard Dean. He voted for the appointment of Attorney General Ashcroft over the howls of liberals across the state. He voted time and again for judicial appointments, where he believed the President was putting forward qualified candidates.
Nobody in Washington has a reputation for being tighter with a buck than Russ Feingold. His office budget consistently ranks among the most austere. His political fund-raising is renown for being squeaky clean.
If Russ is out of the mainstream as a presidential candidate, it has much more to do with his maverick approach to clean government and tight fisted spending. No amount of mud slinging is going to change that.
