Trojans outlast hurting Vikings

Five-game slump snapped by Turner

ORFORDVILLE - Turner boys basketball head coach John Pelock was happy to see his team grind out a 43-35 Rock Valley Conference win over host Parkview Tuesday night.

His counterpart, Jim Nyman, is still looking for a break to go his Vikings' way after losing a second straight game following the season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury to standout forward Joel Saucerman. The injury, confirmed as an ACL injury before Tuesday's game, was the second big blow this season for Parkview, as Brad Neal also went down with an ACL injury in only the second practice of the season.

Nyman was frustrated after the loss, but did find one positive to focus on.

“Nobody else got hurt,” Nyman said.

There could have been a lot for Nyman to be happy about if the final 2 minutes, 27 seconds went better for his Vikings (7-5, 2-4 RVC). Parkview had a lead (35-34) at that point following a nice driving lay-up by Ryan Naatz. However, it was all downhill from there. Parkview never scored again thanks to some solid fourth-quarter defense by Turner - and some miscues by the Vikings. Senior guard Zack Colby put the Trojans (3-9, 3-3) back in front for good following two free throws after stealing a pass. Seconds later, Narada Farr stole another pass and scored to make the lead 38-35 with 1:30 left. Parkview failed to do anything offensively, and Turner sealed the win with another lay-up by Kyle Treptow and three free throws by Reggie Summerville in the final seconds.

Nyman said it was all about the turnovers.

“There's no other explanation,” he said. “It was turnovers the whole game.”

Farr led all scorers with 11 points off the bench. Pelock said he did not have Farr in the starting lineup as a motivating tool. It worked - especially when he came off the bench midway through the first quarter. Farr scored seven of his points in the quarter and helped Turner sprint out to a 15-11 lead. Kelly Sahy scored seven first-half points to help Parkview go into halftime tied 23-23, but he did not score again.

Farr only scored two points in the second half, but they were big points.

“(Farr) played real smart and heady, and he only took one bad shot in the second half,” Pelock said. “That was really important. I thought it was his best game of the year.”

Farr said breaking Turner's five-game losing streak was important.

“We needed this,” Farr said.

For Parkview, it was a frustrating loss in what has been a frustrating few weeks. Saucerman's injury happened in the Vikings' 45-43 win at Clinton Jan. 6. It was Parkview's fifth-straight win at the time, but the Vikings have lost twice since. Ryan Naatz led Parkview with nine points Tuesday, but there is no main offensive threat with Saucerman gone.

“They're not handing it well - losing Joel - but unfortunately he's not coming back, so they better start handling it,” Nyman said.

Turner had every player who dressed score. Treptow scored seven points, while Reggie Summerville and Eric Steurer each added six.

“(During the losing streak) we weren't playing together well,” Summerville said. “In this game we won it together as a team.”

Pelock said he hopes Turner can take advantage of the positive momentum.

“It's really nice - especially at this point - to get a win,” he said. “Now we have to try and build on it. We have Big Foot Friday and we have a chance to come out of the first half above .500 in the league.”

NOTES: After Naatz's nine and Sahy's seven points, no other Viking scored more than four. ... Parkview's jayvee team improved its record to 9-3 with a 50-43 win. The Trojans fell to 5-7.
