No primary election will be necessary to decide the race for the School District of Beloit Board of Education.
Come April, only four candidates will vie for two seats being vacated by Georgina Stenstrom and Regina Dunkin.
Stenstrom and Dunkin both filed non-candidacy papers with the district, leaving open two three-year terms to be decided among Hugo Henry, Pam Charles, Max P. Dodson and John Erikson.
The four candidates submitted the proper paperwork with the school district, making them eligible for the April 4 election. A primary would have been necessary only if more than two candidates were competing for each seat.
Henry is married and father of seven grown children.
He retired as a social studies teacher with the School District of Beloit after 34 years. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Social Studies from Lane College in Jackson, Tenn.
A former Beloit City Council member, Henry has served on multiple committees and organizations, including the Beloit Branch of the NAACP, Minority Parent Organization, Golden K Kiwanis Club, Greater Beloit Minority Coalition and Merrill Revitalization Group. Henry helped initiate the district program Project Appleseed in an effort to increase parental involvement.
Charles is a registered nurse and owner of American Medical Licensing Service. She is married to Beloit physician, Dr. Pierre Charles, and has two grown children and two children in Beloit schools. Charles received her degree in nursing from Los Angeles Pierce College in 1984 and has lived in Beloit almost 10 years. Charles recently served on the Beloit Human Growth and Development ad hoc advisory committee and helped reorganize the Beloit Memorial High School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). In addition to chaperoning in the schools and volunteering with several community agencies, Charles is also a member of several organizations, including the League of Women Voters, Crime Stoppers, the African American Infant Mortality Coalition and others.
Dodson is married with four children in the Beloit schools, grades 3, 5, 10 and 11. Dodson is a rest area program manager for VIP Services. The company, based in Elkhorn, provides workshops for people with special needs. Dodson also works part-time at the Beloit Public Library. Dodson has volunteered at school cross country meets and spent time in the schools chaperoning and volunteering in various capacities. He is a current member of the School District of Beloit Superintendent's Family Round-Table and in the past has helped organize a forum in the district on SAGE funding.
Erikson is a graduate of Beloit College, and is an agent at Tricor Insurance and Financial Services. He is a former chairman of the Chamber of Commerce-Greater Beloit and the Stateline Community Foundation. During the casino referendum debate in Beloit, Erikson was a leader of “Better Beloit,” the anti-casino organization. Erikson also helped coach basketball in the district and participated in the Booklegger program through the Beloit Public Library. Erikson is married with three children in Beloit schools.
