Auction planned in the spring
JANESVILLE - Rock County Supervisors endorsed a plan Thursday to auction off the former Rock County Courthouse in Beloit.
The county board had directed the General Services Committee to market the building as part of a plan to move the county's Beloit agencies to the mall. The courthouse, vacant since 2000, had long been an option for housing Beloit offices for Human Services, Veterans Services and the University of Wisconsin Extension currently renting space on Broad and Short streets.
But with the agencies' move to the former Beloit Mall planned in January, the county board voted to market the courthouse in late July. The General Services Committee has been reviewing options for marketing the building, and has chosen to try an auction.
Three auction firms responded to a request for proposals. Dean George Auction Firm of Evansville, was recommended by the committee. The firm's partnership with Century 21 Beloit gave it the edge over the other responding firms - Beloit Auction Service of Beloit, and Accredited Auctioneers of Madison.
The Rock County Board endorsed the auctioning the courthouse with the Dean George firm unanimously at the Thursday meeting.
With the help of Century 21, Dean George has the ability to market the courthouse throughout the Midwest, on over 500 Web sites an don Charter Cable six times each day, in addition to yard signs, multiple listing services, media advertising and online auction sites.
The firms also would provide several property viewing times, a support staff the day of the auction and have promised between $7,000 and $8,000 in promoting the property.
The auction would not cost Rock County anything. Instead, Dean George would add an 8 percent buyers fee to the winning bid at the auction.
The committee has not recommended stipulations for a minimum bid or a local buyer.
Recently, the former Clinton Middle School was sold at auction, netting a high bid of $200,000. The Beloit Courthouse had been appraised at $237,000 in 2003, but the committee did not market it at that time.
The process of marketing the building could begin immediately, an auction date isn't anticipated until the spring.
