‘Implant new, not surgery'
Mr. Clint Wolf didn't quite get the facts straight in his article, “Seeing world with new eyes,” which has led to some public misconceptions. First of all, Dr. Townshend is not performing a new surgery. For almost 30 years, the miracle that is cataract surgery has been replacing patients' cloudy natural eye lenses (the cataract) with a clear monofocal lens implant. Most patients still have to wear reading glasses afterward. A multifocal lens implant allows many properly selected patients to be spectacle independent after their surgery.
Multifocal lens implants aren't new either. Dr. Karen Bhaskar was the first ophthalmologist in Beloit to implant the Array multifocal lens about eight years ago. The ReSTOR implant, however, is an updated design with seemingly better quality of vision. Let's get the facts straight: The lens implant is new, not the surgery.
The patient in the article did not have refractive lensectomy as stated, since she had cataracts. Refractive lensectomy is when the clear natural lens (not a cataract) is removed with an intraocular lens implanted for cosmetic reasons in order to reduce spectacle dependence. The patient underwent standard cataract surgery with a multifocal lens implant. The implant was new, not the surgery.
Mr. Wolf also stated that the, “FDA approved the procedure in March.” The ReSTOR lens implant was approved, not the surgery. He also stated that Dr. Bhaskar was completing training in the procedure. Dr. Bhaskar has been performing state-of-the-art cataract surgery in Beloit for over 11 years. She is not undergoing training for a surgery she performs on a routine basis.
Cataract surgery is a marvelous achievement of modern day medicine, restoring eyesight to our ever-increasing elderly population. Right now, a new lens implant is available, not a new surgery. Dr. Karen Bhaskar is happy to be able to offer the newest lens implant to her patients as she continues to perform state-of-the-art cataract surgery for patients in the Beloit area community.
