Bicyclist injured in accident
A Beloit man was injured Wednesday night after he rode his bicycle through a red light and was struck by a vehicle.
According to Town of Beloit Police reports, Scott H. Hedin, 52, was riding a bicycle north on Park Avenue shortly after midnight when he entered the intersection of Park Avenue and Cranston Road against a red light and was struck by a eastbound vehicle driven by Jeffrey M. Crall, 35, of Beloit.
Hedin was taken to Beloit Memorial Hospital where he was treated for an injury and released. He was charged with violating a traffic control signal and no lights on a bicycle. Crall was charged with injury by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.
Football auction to help relief effort
Aldrich Middle School in Beloit is holding a silent auction for an official Green Bay Packers football autographed by all the team members from the 2002 season.
Silent auction proceeds will go directly to the American Red Cross as part of a districtwide effort to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. The school district also is collecting money and other items such as clothing, toiletries and school supplies, which can be dropped off at any School District of Beloit building, including the Kolak Education Center, 1633 Keeler Ave.
Silent auction bids will be taken until 3:30 p.m. Sept. 16. Bids can be made in person at Aldrich Middle School, 1859 Northgate Drive during school hours or they can be phoned in by calling (608)361-3605.
Community group sets up relief fund
JANESVILLE - The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin has established the Katrina Relief Fund to help citizens of southern Wisconsin contribute to those in need in the wake of hurricane Katrina.
All contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law and the Community Foundation will not assess any administrative fees, ensuring 100 percent of all gifts will be used for relief efforts. An anonymous donor has offered to match all contributions up to $75,000.
Donors can specify where funds are directed - to relief efforts in Alabama, Louisiana or Mississippi.
Checks should be payable to CFSW Katrina Fund and mailed to the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, Inc., 111 N. Main St., Janesville, Wis., 53545. Credit card gifts can be accepted as well. For more information call (608)758-0883 or 800-995-2379 or e-mail info@cfsw.org.
