No injuries in kitchen fire
Beloit firefighters responded to a small kitchen fire in an apartment in the 1200 block of Dewey Avenue Monday.
The fire, which was the result of unattended cooking in the upstairs apartment, occurred at about 3:13 p.m., Fire Investigator Jeremy Flanagan said. No one was injured and the fire caused about $2,000 worth of damage.
The American Red Cross assisted the resident as some cleaning was necessary before the apartment was inhabitable again.
Officer arrested for sexual assault
ROCKFORD - A Winnebago County corrections officer was arrested for criminal sexual assault and official misconduct, for allegedly assaulting a female inmate.
According to a press release, Bradley S. Champion, 35, of Machesney Park, was arrested Friday after a female inmate complained that she had been assaulted while in custody. The allegation was investigated by the detective division which reportedly found sufficient evidence to sustain the allegation.
Champion, an 11-year veteran of the department, was held at the jail on a $50,000 bond.
Three died in
one-vehicle crash
JANESVILLE - A Milton man and two Janesville men died in a Saturday morning crash.
According to a Rock County Sheriff's Department release, the accident occurred in the 4300 block of North River Road, just north of Rovers Hill Court in Janesville Township at 2:34 a.m. after the driver lost control on a curve and entered the ditch, hitting several trees.
The driver, Michael S. Manhart, 21, of Milton, and passenger Steven H. Becker, 23, of Janesville, had been ejected from the vehicle. A second passenger, Jayson B. Buchanan, 22, of Janesville, was trapped in the vehicle.
Manhart was pronounced dead at the scene, as was Buchanan after he was extracted.
Becker was transported to Mercy Hospital with severe head trauma, but later died as a result of his injuries.
Excessive speed is considered a major factor in the cause of the accident. Safety restraints were not used, however airbags were deployed.
The Wisconsin State Patrol assisted in the accident reconstruction.
Two injured when car hit school bus
A child and an adult suffered non-life threatening injuries after the man's car collided with a school bus Friday at 7:40 a.m. on East County Highway J between Shopiere and Clinton.
The Clinton School District bus, driven by Barbara McGregor of Clinton, was stopped to pick up a 10-year-old child when Jerry Brown, 62, of Beloit, rear-ended it the bus, according to a Rock County Sheriff's Department news release.
Brown, who was traveling about 45 miles per hour, said he didn't see the bus. Brown had to be extricated and suffered head injuries. He was taken to Beloit Memorial Hospital.
The 10-year-old being picked up suffered minor injuries to her legs. Approximately six ambulances responded to the scene to treat the child and check the 40 students for injuries.
Brown will be receiving a citation for too fast for conditions.
Town of Turtle, Town of Beloit, Clinton, Beloit and South Beloit assisted.
Call-in show to be rescheduled
The Town Hall Live call-in show on Beloit Cable Access Channel 12 will move to 5 - 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8.
Because of the Labor Day holiday, the Beloit City Council will meet and be broadcast on Tuesday.
