Opportunities for donations abound locally

Several Stateline Area agencies are organizing fund-raising efforts for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

First National Bank is partnering with the American Red Cross to provide a local donation drop-off site for monetary donations.

Customers and non-customers can make checks payable to the American Red Cross and drop them off at any First National Bank location where they will be deposited into a secure account. Donors will receive receipts for tax purposes.

First National Bank will match the amount of money raised collectively by its employees. The employee donation matching will continue until Sept. 15. There is no deadline for general contributions.

Glenn Parry, vice president of human resources, is organizing the effort. People with questions should call 363-8000 or 800-667-4401.

Beloit Memorial Hospital and the Beloit Clinic are collecting medical supplies and bottled water for the victims. Dr. Pierre Charles, a surgeon at the hospital and clinic, said both health agencies have filled a truck full of supplies. The effort is being spearheaded by Dr. David Bhaskar, president of the hospital's medical staff and Jim Ruethling, administrator of the Beloit Clinic.

Charles' wife, Pam Charles, and two Beloit nurses will drive two vans to relief workers in Baton Rouge, La. where many of the evacuees are staying. The local women will leave Saturday and will volunteer their time at a shelter in Baton Rouge until they return later next week.

The vans will contain rubber gloves, surgical gowns and masks, medicine and antibiotics.

Charles is also working with First National Bank to establish a fund for the victims. It will be separate from First National's relief fund and will be used to fund churches that are active in the relief effort. The fund is not expected to be active until next week.

Bhaskar will donate $1,000, encouraging others to make donations.

The Rockton Volunteer Firemen's Association is organizing a fund drive for the hurricane relief. Volunteers will be standing at the intersection of Main Street and Blackhawk Boulevard between Saturday and Monday.

Bruce Lans said the Village of Rockton was cooperative and accommodating with the association in arranging for the use of the city street. The association also will set up a trailer - loaned by Finnegan's RV - in the fire department's parking lot at 201 North Blackhawk.

People can drop off dry goods and bottled water at the trailer. The items will be donated to either the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army. The money raised throughout the drive will be donated to either of the two agencies or other reputable service organizations.

AMCORE Bank has established a Hurricane Relief Fund with a $5,000 donation from the AMCORE Foundation. In addition, AMCORE will match contributions 50 cents on the dollar from employees and customers up to an additional $5,000.

Donations are being accepted at any Illinois or Wisconsin AMCORE branch. Checks should be made payable to: AMCORE Hurricane Relief. Donations will be accepted through Monday, Sept. 19. The money will be sent to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Kelli Miller of S & K Limousine, will be out with the American Red Cross can in hand this weekend, collecting donations for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Miller said she is donating $100 to the American Red Cross to help the hurricane victims, and she and her children will be collecting funds this weekend. She also is encouraging other businesses to donate or match what she collects this weekend.
