Public asked for input into needs assessment
Public input will be sought for a Rock County Needs Assessment when surveys are mailed to random households Friday.
Households targeted to receive the survey will be notified by postcard prior to that date.
"Much time and effort has been put into this project and we hope that recipients of the survey will take the time to fill it out and return it," said Steve Kinkade of Stateline United Way. "Once it is completed we hope to have a clearer vision of what the general population of our county sees as the area's greatest needs."
The survey, which was begun earlier this year, is a collaborative effort first conceived by the two United Ways serving Rock County - Stateline United Way (which covers Beloit and the southern portion of Rock County) and United Way of North Rock County (which is based in Janesville.)
Businesses and foundations also are supporting the project. Besides the two United Ways, other funding came from Stateline Community Foundation, Col. Robert Morse Foundation, Beloit Foundation, Alliant Energy, Mercy Hospital, and Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin.
Bob O'Conner of O'Conner Research and Action was hired to formulate and conduct the assessment. The needs assessment will serve to provide up-to-date information for many county service providers.
"We don't see this as a needs assessment just for United Way," said O'Conner. "The community is ever-changing and it's important to assess the needs of the community every three to five years to make sure there is not a group of people whose needs are falling between the cracks."
A steering committee made up of interested individuals and people representing a variety of county businesses, has been meeting regularly to move the assessment process forward.
The process has included convening focus groups to gain community input and interviewing community leaders one-on-one. That information, along with results of the mailed survey, will be added to other sources of data such as the most recent census and results of any studies done by other county entities.
When all information has been compiled, the results will be widely distributed and announced to the media.
Besides the two United Ways, organizations represented on the Needs Assessment Steering Committee are: American Family Insurance, CESA II, Alliant Energy, United Way of North Rock County, Southern Wisconsin Workforce Development Board, Head Start, City of Beloit, Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, Beloit Health Department, Community Action, Rock River Charter School, Mercy Health System, County of Rock, Rock County Public Health Department, Rock County Human Services, Beloit School District, Dean Care/Dean Health System, Janesville Police Department, Beloit Memorial Hospital, Family Service Association, Stateline Community Foundation, Central Labor Council, Col. Robert Morse Foundation and City of Janesville.
