Dental services offered
Blackhawk Technical College's Dental Hygiene program's staff and students are offering basic, low-cost dental hygiene services to area residents starting Aug. 23.
BTC offers basic dental cleanings and exams but does not perform comprehensive dental work. Among the services are a comprehensive medical and dental history, blood pressure screening, soft tissue assessment, a full mouth periodontal assessment, radiographs, oral hygiene instructions, prophylaxis, periodontal scaling and root planning, dental examinations, fluoride treatment, recall management, and periodontal maintenance.
The fee for adults is $12, with senior citizens (those 62 and over) and children 12 and under costing $6. All procedures are completed by student dental hygienists under the supervision of a licensed dentist and dental hygienist.

Safe sitter program set
A Safe Sitter program for boys and girls who want to learn about baby sitting will be offered 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Aug. 19 in the auditorium at Beloit Memorial Hospital, 1969 W. Hart Road.
The program, for children age 11 to 14, will teach students how to handle emergencies when caring for young children, basic life-saving techniques, rescue breathing, safety precautions, accident prevention and basic child care tips.
A fee of $35 will be charged to cover the cost of the program expenses.

Blood drive scheduled
Blood donors are being asked to roll up their sleeves for a blood drive set for noon - 6 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Rotary River Center, 1220 Riverside Drive, Beloit.
The Rock River Valley Blood Center is conducting the blood drive. The center is the sole provider of blood and related products for Beloit Memorial Hospital, Rockford Memorial Hospital, SwedishAmerican Hospital and OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center.
Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health on the day they give blood.

Breastfeeding discussed
JANESVILLE - A meeting is set for 1:30 Aug. 29 at the Nutrition and Health Associates office, 32 E. Racine St., Janesville, to discuss ways to inform expectant mothers and families about breastfeeding support in Rock County.
Long-term health benefits have been found in breast-fed infants. Certified breastfeeding educators are available in the county to help mothers initiate breastfeeding and provide support for mothers and families.

New doctor in Rockford
ROCKFORD - Dr. Michael Muise, a family practice doctor, recently joined Rockford Health Physicians, 2300 N. Rockton Ave.
Muise served as chief resident at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, where he also earned his medical degree. His special interests include helping families manage chronic illness, such as hypertension, diabetes and congestive heart failure.
