'Diving victim has improvement'
Thank you for your story showing interest in my nephew, Ben Karr, after his unfortunate accident on Rock River Sunday, June 5.
My sister, Juli, wanted to be sure that everyone knows how grateful she is to those who worked at saving Ben's life right after the accident. Besides Becky Bauman, who is in training to become a nurse, Jackie George, who is a nurse from Beloit Memorial Hospital, showed up on the scene to offer help. She and Becky did compressions and CPR. Hank Bauman helped transport Ben to shore to meet the paramedics. Juli's family is forever grateful to these people, as well as the doctors and nurses who have cared for him since.
We want to ask the public to continue praying for Ben as he makes slow progress toward recovery. We were happy to learn that his spinal cord is not severed, and less than 72 hours after the diving incident (which we feared may totally paralyze him) he was able to wave his hand. Next, Ben is anxious to try breathing without a respirator.
As you know, expenses will be tremendous as the family attempts to wade through all the bills throughout Ben's recovery. A fund-raiser is being planned for the near future at the Hog Cabin on Newark Road, through cooperation with owner Rico Podraski. Anyone who would like to help with that event can contact me at 363-3812.
