Summer concert draws big crowd to Riverside Park

It didn't take the crowd long to get into Music at Harry's Place.

People were setting up chairs early in order to get good seats for the annual performance from The Rhythm Rockets. Once the music started, the toe tapping, finger snapping and dancing began.

"They're one of the best swing bands around," Connie Ryan of Beloit said as she swayed in her seat during the group's second number. "I don't think people realize what they have here."

Ryan is not only a regular at Music at Harry's Place, she's also participating in Dancin' at Harry's Place this year. While the musical entertainment is on various Friday evenings throughout the summer at Riverside Park, dance lesson are taught each Monday at the Harry C. Moore Pavilion in preparation for the next performance.

Ryan said a lot of people have been showing up for the dance lessons, but noted as a single female, she was hoping for more male lead dancers at the lessons. To compensate, Ryan asked a friend from Milwaukee to come and dance with her Friday night. She snapped along with the music while she waited for him to arrive.

"I wouldn't miss The Rhythm Rockets or Westside Andy for anything," Ryan said, noting Westside Andy will perform at the July 1 Music at Harry's Place.

While people started to get up and dance, Karriss Wood of Beloit worked to corral the pet she brought with her to Riverside Park. Socks the guinea pig munched on grass and hid under a blanket while The Rhythm Rockets played nearby.

When asked if Socks liked music, Wood replied, "We listen to music some times."

Friday's musical performance at Riverside Park was the year's first installment of Music at Harry's Place. By the time the music started at 7 p.m., the park was full and food vendors were busy serving the crowd.

This year marks the eighth year for the event, according to Jeff Adams, spokesman for Friends of the Riverfront. Outdoor concerts are also set for July 1, 22 and 29; Aug. 12 and 26; and Sept. 9 at the Harry C. Moore Pavilion. All concerts are free.

Each concert is sponsored by a local group or business. Beloit Memorial Hospital sponsors the first concert of the year, and the hospital is celebrating its 35th anniversary at West Hart Road this year.

In addition to serving birthday cake, a number of health experts were on hand to talk about various topics, including advanced directives, diabetes and heart disease and arthritis. The hospital's massage therapist was on hand to give chair massages, and a dietitian gave examples of what size portions of food people should be eating.

Hospital spokesman Sarah Starmer said promoting BMH's 35th anniversary made this year's sponsorship of the first Music at Harry's Place extra special.

"It's good community involvement, and people seem to enjoy the cake," she said, noting the health fair would end when the band began playing so employees of the hospital could enjoy the music.
