Two injured in motorcycle crash
Two people were injured when the motorcycle they were riding collided with a truck.
The accident occurred at 7:32 p.m. Tuesday in Plymouth Township, according to a Rock County Sheriff's Department release.
A truck driven by Steven G. Thompson, 16, of Beloit, was northbound on County Highway H when he stopped at a stop sign then turned west on State Highway 213, according to reports. Chris R. Barber, 26, of Smithton, Ill. was westbound on his Kawasaki motorcycle and was cresting a hill. Barber's motorcycle struck the rear of the truck.
Barber was treated and released at Beloit Memorial Hospital. His passenger, Katie M. Kuecher, 23, sustained head and chest injuries and was transported to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison where she was listed in fair condition. Both Barber and Kuecher were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
Thompson was cited for failure to yield the right of way from stop sign, and Barber was cited for operating while suspended.
Rescued man in serious condition
The Beloit man who dove into the Rock River Sunday, breaking his neck, has had surgery to remove bone fragments from his spine.
Ben Karr, 23, is in intensive care at University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison where a spokeswoman Wednesday said he is in serious condition.
His father, Dave Karr, said Ben underwent surgery Tuesday and is now in recovery. However, his prognosis is for long-term paralyses.
"The best we can hope for is he will be able to breathe on his own," Karr said.
He added that while his son is expected to be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life, they hope he will regain the use of his arms so he can move around.
"They cannot assess how badly his spinal cord is damaged," Karr said.
Ben Karr dove into shallow water in the Rock River Sunday while out boating with friends. Karr said Beloit Memorial Hospital ER Technician Rebecca Baumann and BMH R.N. Jacqueline George performed life saving measures during the one mile boat ride from the accident scene to Preservation Park. Ambulance crews met them at the park.
Karr said that after Ben broke his neck he could not breathe on his own.
Karr is a 2000 graduate of Beloit Turner High School. He worked as a self-employed carpenter.
Flags available from Robson
With Flag Day and the Fourth of July approaching, State Sen. Judy Robson is offering American flags and Wisconsin flags for purchase through her office.
American flags cost $9.50 and Wisconsin flags cost $19.52. Both types of flags are made of durable nylon and are 3-by-5 feet in size. Checks should be made to the State of Wisconsin and mailed to Sen. Robson, P.O. Box 7882, Madison, Wis. 53707-7882.
