Beloit loses to Swing

Smit slips to 1-5
DAVENPORT, Iowa - Beloit starter Alexander Smit pitched well enough to win, but saw his record dip to 1-5 as the Snappers fell to the Swing of the Quad Cities, 7-2, in Midwest League action Monday night.
Smit allowed three runs in his six innings of working. He surrendered six hits, walked one and struck out six.
Beloit trailed 3-0 when he left, however, and could manage only five hits and two runs off of the combined efforts of four Swing pitchers.
Starter Dennis Dove (4-2) picked up the victory, working 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Dennis Medina shut out the Snappers for 1 1/3 innings before they finally scored against Justin Knoff in the eighth.
With one out, Knoff loaded the bases by walkiing Angelo Fermin, Deacon Burns and Jeremy Pickrel. Knoff struck out David Winfree, but Mark Zamojc singled to right to plate two runs. Kevin Ool replaced Knoff and got Trevor Plouffe to ground into a forceout to end the inning.
Ool then retired the side in order in the ninth.
Smit allowed a run in the first inning when he gave up consecutive singles to Matt Shepherd, Joe Mather and Jarrett Hoffpauir.
The game stayed 1-0 until the fifth. Smit retired the first two batters, but walked Wes Swackhamer. Matt Lemanczyk knocked him in with a triple. A wild pitch by Smit allowed Lemanczyk to score and make it 3-0.
Quad Cities tacked on four runs in the seventh inning, but just one was earned off reliever David Shinskie.
Matt Shepherd and Jarrret Hoffpauir each had two hits to lead Quad Cities' eight-hit attack. The Snappers had just four singles and a triple by Burns.
Beloit slipped to 18-20 with the loss, seven games behind front-running Clinton (25-13) in the Western Division. Quad Cities (20-16) is in second.
