High School Apartments damaged
Seven people were treated for smoke inhalation and dozens more were displaced after fire ripped through their Beloit apartment building Sunday.
The fire at the High School Apartments, 220 W. Grand, was reported at about 12:30 a.m. Firefighters arrived on scene to find flames showing from the first floor apartment where the fire originated, and smoke extending throughout the building.
"We had a few people that were filing out upon arrival, but the majority of them were still in their apartments," Assistant Chief Tim Curtis said.
Most were awakened from a sound sleep by smoke alarms.
"There was so much heat and smoke in the hallway in the first floor, we ended up pulling several people out of the first floor out of windows," Curtis said. "We did find one of the victims in the first floor hallway collapsed, and we then pulled her from the first floor hallway to the main entrance."
Crews were sent to the second and third floors to remove occupants through interior stairwells.
Seven people were taken to Beloit Memorial Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. One later was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Milwaukee for severe smoke inhalation. One firefighter was injured with an animal bite while attempting to rescue an animal.
All of the occupants are being assisted by the Red Cross and temporary shelter was provided by the New Life Center on West Grand Avenue. Curtis said some of the mostly elderly occupants had been housed by family members.
The Rock County Humane Society is housing the two cats and two birds that were removed from the building until tenants are settled.
Curtis said that while the first floor apartment where the fire started was completely gutted, and there was heat damage on the first floor and smoke damage throughout, the building is salvageable.
He believed the owner William Hart, Hart Rentals, had already started cleaning.
The estimated structure damage is $200,000 and contents damage is estimated at $300,000.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Firefighters were assisted by Town of Turtle, Town of Beloit, Janesville, Rockton, South Beloit and Sharon firefighters.
A major fire in Clinton was occurring at about the same time.
