Coalition gets safety grant
The Beloit Health Department's Safe Community Coalition has received a $35,342 grant from the Wisconsin department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Safety to continue project coordination and implementation in 2005.
Projects of the coalition have included the annual Walk Our Children to School day, the Slow Down yard sign campaign, a monthly car seat fitting station, and a fall prevention project. The coalition meets quarterly and always in in need of supporting agency members and citizen members.
This will be the sixth year the group has addressed the top causes of injuries in Beloit.
Grief support offered
Beloit Regional Hospice is hosting a walk-in holiday grief support group at the hospice office, 655 Third St., Suite 200, Beloit.
Holidays can be very difficult after the death of a loved one. This group will offer support and tips to survive the holidays.
Groups will be held 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7 and 14. Walk-in support groups are offered on the fourth Tuesday of each month and a seven-week educational support group for adults will begin Jan. 4. A children/teen/caregiver group is scheduled to start the end of January.

Nurse assistant course set
Blackhawk Technical College will offer a skilled nursing assistant course starting in January at its central campus between Beloit and Janesville.
Classes will be held 8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Jan. 18 through March 10. Clinical portions will be at Premiere Rehabilitation in Beloit and at Mercy Hospital in Janesville.
Classes also will be held 3:30 - 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday Jan. 18 through March 10 with clinical portions at Cedar Crest in Janesville and at Beloit Memorial Hospital.

Podiatrist joins Mercy
JANESVILLE - Dr. Gregory R. Zainer, a podiatrist, has joined the medical staff of Mercy Health System.
Zainer earned his doctor of podiatric medicine degree at Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and he completed his post-graduate work at the Windom Area Podiatric Post-Graduate Program, Worthington, Minn. His areas of expertise and special interest include arthritis and bursitis, corns and calluses, bunions, diabetic foot care and foot and ankle surgery.
He will practice at the Mercy Evansville Medical Center, the Mercy Milton Medical Center and the Mercy Diabetes Center.
Children remembered
ROCKFORD - A candlelight ceremony to remember children who have passed away will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Angel Statue of Hope in Waterside Park at the corner of State and Water streets in downtown Rockford.
The ceremony is being promoted by Rockford Health System.
Cedar Crest event slated
JANESVILLE - Cedar Crest's assisted living unit, 1702 S. River Road, will hold a Holiday Open House and Bake Sale 2 - 6 p.m. Dec. 9 .
The event will include entertainment, light refreshments and tours of the assisted living center. Baked goods and holiday ornaments from Cedar Crest residents and staff will be sold. All proceeds will go to the Cedar Crest Bus Fund. Information on Cedar Crest's new Memory Care residence also will be available.
Diet for high blood pressure
ROCKFORD - A free, one-session class, "Eating to Lower Your Blood Pressure," will be presented 4 - 5:30 p.m. Dec. 7 at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, 5510 E. State St., Rockford.
The class will present the basics of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. A registered dietitian will evaluate participants' current eating pattern and make recommendations for changes that will help them make healthier eating choices.
