Bar coding showcased
Beloit Memorial Hospital staff recently shared their experiences with a bar coding medication administration system at the Wisconsin Quality and Safety Showcase held in Eau Claire, Wis.
More than 90 projects were exhibited, shwoing a variety of technology and services that enhance safety of care for patients.
Beloit Memorial Hospital's Care Fusion bar coding system, which was implemented in 2003, is one of the first in the nation to use technology to reduce errors associated with giving medication to patients. The system is designed to make sure the correct patient is receiving the correct medication in the correct dosage.
Blood drive scheduled
A blood drive will be held noon - 6 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Second Congregational Church, 657 Bluff St., Beloit.
The blood drive is being conducted by the American Red Cross, South Central Wisconsin Chapter and local officials stress how important it is to give blood during the holidays.
Those who intend to donate blood should bring their donor card or drivers license, or two other forms of identification.
Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health.

Electronic charts used
ROCKFORD - SwedishAmerican Medical Group/Valley has implemented a new system of electronic medical records (EMR) keeping.
The clinic staff and physicians no longer use the traditional paper chart in keeping patient records. The clinic is expected to benefit from clinical and workflow efficiencies, including enhanced patient care, said Jeffrey Bean, director of medical group informatics.
Medication history, allergies, diagnoses, laboratory and medical imaging results and hospital discharge summaries will be cept using the Epic Systems EMR.
SwedishAmerican Medical Group/Byron and Davis Junction are the next clinics to implement EMR by Dec. 1.
Neonatal unit gets beds
ROCKFORD - The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Rockford Memorial Hospital recently received 18 new isolettes and two Giraffe OmniBeds. The Giraffe beds are designed for the most critically ill newborns. They can be enclosed, providing warmth and quiet to the sickest infants.
The new equipment was purchased with $234,000 raised by the Rockford Memorial Hospital Foundation.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Rockford Memorial Hospital is a Level III unit and cares for more than 400 critically ill newborns each year.
Training for athletes set
JANESVILLE - Coaches, Athletes and parents are invited to attend a free presentation and training session 6 - 7 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Mercy Acceleration Sports Training Program facility, 557 N. Washington, St., Janesville.
Brent Wesolek, M.S., C.S.C.S., will demonstrate the squat exercise, which is used to improve an athlete's vertical jump, sprint speed, multi-directional quickness, coordination and more.
