Flu shots running low, but still offered

It's not too late to get a flu shot in Beloit.
Vaccines are still available at the Beloit Health Department, Beloit Memorial Hospital outreach centers, Rock County Health Department and at some private physician offices.
"I think we have enough flu vaccine still available at various locations in this community," said Linda Dalton, interim director of the Beloit Health Department. "It is definitely not too late."
The Beloit Health Department is giving vaccines by appointment only to those meeting the guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
Those eligible to receive the shots include: individuals age 65 and older, anyone with a medical condition, women who will be pregnant during flu season, residents of nursing homes and long term care facilities, health care workers involved in direct patient care, children who are on chronic aspirin therapy, all children age 6-23 months of age and any care giver of a child under 6 months of age.
As of Friday morning, the Beloit Health Department had 100 doses for adults left out of the 1,720 Aventis Pasteur vaccines purchased from Beloit Memorial Hospital.
The department didn't receive its original order from Chiron, the producer from England which had its license revoked.
The Vaccines for Children program provided the department with 150 doses of children's flu vaccines.
"We have no shortage of children's vaccine," Dalton said.
Fortunately the flu has not spread very fast in the area, Dalton said.
As of Oct. 25 only three cases of flu were reported in the state of Wisconsin.
"The flu season has not peaked at this point. It generally does not peak until we get into December and January," Dalton said.
The flu shot is also available at four of the Beloit Memorial Hospital Outreach services by making an appointment.
Although there are plenty of flu shots in Beloit, Dalton still stresses the need for prevention.
"People should keep themselves healthy, get good rest and good nutrition," Dalton said.
Dalton advises frequent hand washing, covering mouths while coughing and limiting exposure to those who are infected.
The Rock County Health Department also has an adequate supply of flu vaccines, said Matt Haeger, Rock County Health Department nursing director.
Haeger encourages anyone over 65 to come get a flu shot.
"We still know there is a number of people over 65 who haven't got it," Haeger said. "Anybody over 65 should be in. There are vaccinations available for them. They are not taking it away from anybody. Now is a good time to get it."
To get a flu shot, contact the Beloit Health Department at (608)-364-6630, the Rock County Health Department at (608)-757-5440 or one of Beloit Memorial Hospital's outreach centers, including Darien Medical Center, (262)724-1151; Janesville Occupational Health and Medical Center, (608)757-1217; West Side Medical Center, (608)363-7510; or the Roscoe, Rockton Medical Center, (815)623-7301.
The cost of the flu shot is $17. Medicare Part B will cover flu shots.
