Ken Hendricks will receive national publicity in the coming days with publication of Forbes magazine's "Forbes 400" list.
Hendricks is listed 37th among the 45 "Notable Newbies" on this year's list. His listed net worth, according to the Forbes article highlighting Hendricks' accomplishments, is $850 million.
The magazine is set to be distributed across the Midwest some time next week.
The article, written by David Armstrong, is entitled "Up on the Roof" and highlights Hendricks' company, American Builders & Contractors (ABC) Supply, which is based in Beloit.
Hendricks is the sole owner of the privately held company.
For the article, Armstrong traveled to Beloit and spent time with Hendricks. He made several observations about the 62-year-old businessman, including that ABC Supply does not have a public relations department, Hendricks answers his own telephone, and he rarely flies anything but coach.
Armstrong outlines Hendricks' life, including that growing up he felt looked down upon by others because his family was working-class, and he was the son of a roofer. Armstrong also writes that Hendricks dropped out of high school in order to support his then-pregnant girlfriend.
Hendricks, who was raised in Janesville and still lives there, got into the roofing business by driving down streets and looking for houses in need of new roofs. After working his full-time job during the day, Hendricks would go back to the houses at night and offer to reshingle the homes on weekends.
Today, ABC Supply is the largest wholesaler of roofing supplies in the United States, and among the largest suppliers of vinyl sidings and windows.
Last year ABC Supply netted $67 million on sales of $1.8 billion. The company includes 265 distribution centers in 43 states.
In addition to running ABC Supply, Hendricks also owns AmCraft Building Products, Mulehide Products, Hendricks Development, Corporate Contractors Inc., Cay Home Furnishing, Federal Heath Sign Company, Pur Pack and Stratford Simmons.
In all, Hendricks employs more than 4,000 people across the country.
In addition to the article on Hendricks, Armstrong wrote a second story on the man titled "Raise the Roof." That article details Hendricks' fascination with green roofs, "an eco-friendly roofing system that covers the tops of buildings with vegetation..." The roofs have been popular in Europe for years, but are just now catching on here, the Forbes article states.
Hendricks and an engineer created what they call a Green Grid, which includes interlocking modules of plants. The system is patent pending, but that hasn't stopped Hendricks from installing such a roof on ABC Supply's headquarters along Riverside Drive in Beloit.
