Two vie for opportunity to challenge U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan
JANESVILLE - Two Democrats will face off next week for the right to run against Republican Paul Ryan for the 1st Congressional District seat.
Dr. Jeffrey Thomas will face Chet Bell in the Sept. 14 primary. The winner will take on Ryan in November.
Thomas is making his fifth run for the 1st Congressional District seat. He is an orthopedic surgeon from Janesville. Thomas served on the Janesville City Council from 1992 to 1996, and on the Janesville School Board from 1977 to 1989.
In addition to seeking the 1st Congressional District seat, Thomas also has run for Wisconsin Assembly and Senate.
In his last election bid, Thomas lost to Paul Ryan 176,673 to 89,253. It was the first time Thomas made it out of the primary and onto the general election ballot.
No other information was available on Thomas.
Chet Bell is making his first run for political office because he believes it important Paul Ryan fight for his seat in Congress and that "we have a voice that is concerned with listening to the working families and seniors of the 1st Congressional District," he said.
Born in Milwaukee, the 41-year-old Bell grew up in West Allis and now lives in Mukwonago as an adjunct assistant professor at Marquette University in Milwaukee. He teaches in the department of performing arts at the school. Previously he has served as the finance/production manager in the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre and taught at the University of North Carolina - Wilmington. He is married and has three children, he said.
His campaign is focusing on the issues of jobs and the economy. He believes it important to help provide opportunities for good paying jobs and has heard from many people how important it is to retain jobs already in the district, he said.
"The economic boom we keep hearing about hasn't grabbed hold in the 1st Congressional District," he said.
He points to unemployment rates, which while decreasing are still low in the Milwaukee and Janesville areas.
"The rates as they stand now are unacceptable," he said. "We've only seen slight improvements and they're still unacceptable."
