'Raise gas tax to fix roads'

Print Article

Over the last several months many ideas about how to fund our roads have been floated and, of course, they all sank.

The most expensive and least attractive is the toll road for all the obvious reasons, cost, time to get it done, and all the added construction in addition to road work. Add to that hundreds of new state employees to make it work.

The least costly, easiest and quickest solution is to raise the fuel tax five cents per gallon. The system is already in place and could be done with literally key strokes on the computer.

The average vehicle owner probably uses about 30 gallons per week, some more, some less. That'a a buck and a half per week, folks. Anyone who cannot afford that tax cannot afford the vehicle, license, maintenance, insurance or the gas itself.

Many would complain as we all do from time to time, but I am sure many of those same people think nothing of buying $3 coffees, $1.29 for water at the gas and go, or the latest $999 cell phone.

Oh, one more thing, a law preventing the state from taking road dollars from other sources as the revenue from increased gas tax goes up.

As for the governor keeping his promises not to raise taxes, he also promised open government and we all know how that is going. In the interest of disclosure, I voted for Walker three times.
