'Give a voice for children'

Print Article

Childhood is a time that is supposed to be filled with laughter, happiness, and a little bit of mischief. It is a crucial time of growth and development, shaping the child's future and fundamental values and beliefs.

Currently, in Rock County alone, there are over 3,000 child abuse and neglect cases reported each year. This is a huge problem, but there is something you can do to help. Consider becoming a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer. A CASA gives the children a voice, looks out for their needs and interests and becomes a much-needed, stable adult figure in their lives.

Too often than not, the child's needs and wants are overlooked. As a CASA, I become their voice through reports written to the judge, giving my recommendations on what's best for the child. I gather my information based off of weekly outings with my kiddos, which also allows for bonding and trust to be formed. I believe I make a difference in the child's life by letting them know how important they are, something they may not have been told throughout their life.

At this time, there are 130 kids on a waiting list with children hoping for someone like you to be their CASA. Training and support is provided by the CASA staff. The next training sessions begin September 19th. Go to www.casarockcounty.org or call 608-305-0187 to learn more. Listen to the silent cry for help from those desperate children and give them a voice.
