ROCKTON - Plans to move forward with construction on the fieldhouse at Hononegah Community High School and preparing the old Rockton Grade School building for equipment and storage progressed Wednesday at a district board meeting.

The Hononegah school board approved two contracts, one for the purchase of the old grade school at 400 E. Chapel St. and another green-lighting action on site preparation and demolition work at the fieldhouse site at the high school.

Demolition and site work will start shortly after Labor Day on the fieldhouse and the site will see construction begin later fall, set to be finished in the fall of 2018.

Final site plans will be discussed and approved at the end of August, and bids of the $17.8 million project will be advertised following the finalization of construction site plans.

District officials are currently working with DLA Architects out of Itasca, Illinois, to draft the final construction plans.

The grade school purchase of $200,000 will pave the way to allow additional space for maintenance and high school staff and faculty overflow parking. Work to prepare the building will start within the next two weeks to prepare the building before the first day of school Aug. 16.
