Flu season at its peak

The flu season in Wisconsin is at its peak and it is striking younger victims, according to health experts.

Thomas Haupt, Wisconsin influenza surveillance coordinator, said he is seeing about 50 to 70 hospitalizations due to flu a week. He said while last year, the bulk of the hospitalizations were patients age 65 and older, this year the hospitalizations mostly are patients age 18 to 64.

Also, one in four patients are ICU (Intensive Care Unit) admissions and one in 10 require mechanical ventilation.
