Finished harpsichord is featured in concert

When a Beloit College graduate donated a partly-finished harpsichord to his alma mater in 1998, the college went to work to complete the instrument.

Now fully operational, the new double-manual harpsichord, has already been tried in performances from Beloit to Eau Claire, and will be featured in a special dedication concert given by the world-renowned harpsichordist Peter Marshall. The concert will take place Saturday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m., in Beloit College's Eaton Chapel.

Proceeding the dedication concert will be a harpsichord showcase in the College's Eaton Chapel from 4-6 p.m. The showcase will include demonstrations on the College's clavichord and chamber organ.

Marshall has performed as a soloist on harpsichord, organ and piano, throughout the world. He has appeared as soloist with the New York Philharmonic, and the National, Atlanta, Richmond and Virginia Symphonies, as well as with the chamber groups Hesperus and the Folger Consort.

Chair of the organ department at Catholic University of America from 1984-1993, he has taught and served as chapel organist at Duke University. With degrees from Oberlin College and Yale University, he has also studied at the Musikhochschule Lubeck as a Fullbright scholar.

The harpsichord donor, David Furgason, graduated from Beloit College in 1974 and currently resides in Rockford. He comes from a family of Beloit College graduates, with parents who graduated in 1953 and 1954, and a sister who graduated in 1976.

The college will host the donor and his family for the dedication concert and showcase. I look forward to hearing the instrument as it is used to its full potential, states Furgason.

Funded by Beloit College's Year of the Arts and music department, both the dedication concert and harpsichord showcase are free and open to the public. Voluntary contributions will be accepted at the door.
