ROCKTON — Ellie Welsh’s best quality is going to come in handy for Randy Weibel this season. Weibel, the longtime girls basketball coach at Hononegah, is facing a season in which only two healthy seniors will take the floor Wednesday night in the season opener against McHenry in Huntley.
Luckily for him, Welsh is one of them.
“She brings energy and she’s one of the best leaders we’ve ever coached,” Weibel said. “She leads by example. She just knows how to motivate her teammates. She’s the perfect leader. She loves her team and she’s not worried about herself or her stats. She just wants to win.
“Of all years, having someone like that on this year’s team is huge. When you have someone on your team like that, you just hope it carries over to next year and the year after. These underclassmen see that and hopefully take after that.”
Welsh cemented her future on the court by signing her letter of intent to play basketball at Michigan Tech University, a bona fide NCAA Division II power that is currently ranked eighth in the top 25 poll.
Weibel said Welsh should be a good fit at that level.
