Lorraine Karine Gilbert
Lorraine Karine Gilbert, age 89, passed away Thursday, October 23, 2008 at Woods Crossing in Brodhead.
She was born November 10, 1918 on her parent's farm in the Town of Newark, the daughter of Benny and Hilda (Anderson) Engen.
An area resident her entire life, Lorraine was a member of the Brodhead High School Class of 1936. In her youth, Red, as she was nicknamed, enjoyed school, playing basketball, cross country skiing, and developing a love of music. After high school she worked for three years as a secretary for U. M. A. O'Breen Department Store in Fond du lac, WI, and, later in life, a decade in the offices of Swiss Colony in Monroe, and also as a cook at Cozy Corner Restaurant.
On November 13, 1939, she secretly married the great love of her life, Giles H. Gilbert, in Dubuque, Iowa. Of that event she wrote , . . .I shall remember all my life. . . it was a perfect day. Together they ran a business in Orfordville, and farmed in Rock County for many years, raising a family, before moving to Brodhead. He passed away in 2005.
Lorraine was a lifelong member of Luther Valley Church. She was active in Ruth Circle, Altar Guild, American Lutheran Church Women, the choir and the quilting group. The church had a special place in her heart.
Besides mastering the clarinet, piano, organ, and singing, she enjoyed making traditional Norwegian delights, in particular lefse. She also was pleased to have learned to use a computer in her late 70s.
Lorraine very much enjoyed her extensive family and was proud of each one. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother and a great friend. She'll be missed.
Lorraine is survived by her children: Giles M. Gilbert of rural Brodhead, Gail Wright of rural Brodhead, Kathy (Mike) Leigh of New London, and Debra (Neal) Heller of Beloit; Mendon (Theresa) Burns-Gilbert of Sparta, Kirk (Viola) Gilbert of Syracuse, Indiana, 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren,
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Giles; daughters: Bonnie Stenberg, Beverly Ann and Mary Ann Gilbert; brothers: Alton and Seymour Engen.
Funeral services will be held at Luther Valley Church, Town of Newark, at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 27, 2008 with Pastor Mary Froiland officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service on Monday. Burial will be in Luther Valley Cemetery.
Newcomer-Silverthorn Chapel on the Hill, Orfordville, is in charge of arrangements for the family.
June Irene Pearson Krahn
June Irene Pearson Krahn, 85, passed away on October 12, 2008, in Port Charlotte, FL. She was born June 28, 1923, to Walter and Maude Pearson of Clinton, WI. June married Harvey Oscar Krahn, June 1, 1945. Harvey passed away March 30, 1980.
June is survived by her step daughter Donna (Robert) Willis: and daughters Judy Krahn and Sherla Koebbeman and her companion Carlton Bond, 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Also her extended family from the LaCrosse, WI area, who she loved as her own, Betty Bahr, Joseph Bahr, 4 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
In 1993, she married George Michael Christ, deceased in May 2007, of Winter Haven, FL, and survived by his 4 children and 8 grandchildren.
June is also survived by a sister, Iolyn Beers of Belvideer, IL and a brother, Victor Pearson of Clinton WI and many loved nieces and nephews.
June loved camping, hunting and fishing. She was a remarkably talented seamstress, and enjoyed doing needlepoint and listening to classical music. June and Harvey were involved in the inception of Hospice in LaCrosse, WI, in 1979, and later June was also instrumental in helping Hospice get its start in Rockford, IL.
The Celebration of Life for June will take place on Nov. 8, 2008, at 2:00, in the afternoon at Jefferson Prairie Lutheran Church, 23184 Bergon Rd., Poplar Grove, IL 61065. There will be a reception directly after in the Fellowship Room. There will be no graveside ceremony.
