Winnebago County inmate dies in suicide try

ROCKFORD — An inmate at the Winnebago County Jail in Rockford died Saturday evening due to an apparent suicide, according to a news release from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.

Bruce Koeneke, 54, of Rockford, was pronounced dead at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford Saturday evening.

At 7:53 p.m. Saturday, corrections officers at the jail found Koeneke unresponsive due to an apparent suicide attempt. Officers attempted medical assistance to the subject and called the Rock County Fire Department for emergency medical personnel. He was taken to SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford where he was pronounced dead.

Koeneke had been charged on Aug. 10 with burglary, possession of stolen property and violation of a protection order.

The sheriff’s office is conducting an investigation of the incident.
